Austin City Limits: recycling this year's festival headliners so you don't have to

The lineup for the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival has been announced and it is teeming with top-notch talent. The Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band round out the top slots of Outside Lands Lollapalooza this year's edition of the ACL, adding Kings of Leon, Theivery Corporation and Ben Harper to the big name mix. While I commend ACL for sticking to younger acts, at least by Coachella's standards, I can't help but note that their big name headliners (Beasties, Pearl Jam, DMB) are the exact same as San Francisco's Outside Lands festival. The exact same. While there is nothing wrong with recycling a few bands like this, it kind of puts your festival at a disadvantage, especially since ACL is about a month later than Outside Lands. But hey, the lineup is long and has some pretty intriguing acts to round out everything. The entire lineup, with a brief review of it all, is after the jump.

Throwing in The Knux, !!!, Passion Pit, John Vanderslice, Girl Talk, Phoenix, The Virgins, Dr. Dog and Blitzen Trapper helps round things out nicely. Hell, they even got the B-52's, Toadies and Sonic Youth for those fans clamoring to recreate the summer of 1991. These bands also prove that your 2009 music festival must include some older acts to have any hopes of selling tickets.

This lineup makes me applaud Coachella for branching out and compiling a lineup that is much unlike any other festival this season -- no one but Goldenvoice, the folks in charge of Coachella, has the balls to book a band like Throbbing Gristle. However, comparing Coachella and ACL is apples and oranges. I commend ACL for booking such a youthful lineup and not pandering to older fans like Coachella ever so shamelessly does. It's just too bad that ACL's young, hip lineup looks exactly like the lineups of both Outside Lands and Lollapalooza.

The Austin City Limits Music Festival runs October 2-4 in Austin's Zilker Park. Three-day passes will set you back $185 -- a pretty decent price, if you ask me. Head to aclfestival.com to take in the full lineup and find out other information about the festival.
