About Damn Time: Matt Giraud Off of 'Idol'

Time to say goodbye, Giraud.

During his tenure on American Idol, Matt Giraud was like the Little Dueling Piano Player Who Could: Snubbed by the voting public in the Top 36, the judges made him one of their "judges choice" picks for the Top 13. Then, when he finally got voted off two weeks ago after his horrible performance during Movie Soundtrack Week, they used their save option to give him and the giant boil/birthmark on his forehead one more shot. And last week after yet another mediocre performance during Disco Week, viewers decided to keep him around for yet another week, letting Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai go home instead.

Even he acknowledged during last night's results show that he felt like Idol's "cat with nine lives." Giraud seems like a good guy, and he had to suffer the indignity of both being kicked off last night and watching yet another clip of him as an awkward pre-teen in a long-ago Christmas pageant, but I think even he would agree that his time had finally run out.

In fact, the only unexpected part of last night's show was that the flamboyantly awesome, seemingly unstoppable juggernaut that is Adam Lambert was in the bottom two. Se posible? I guess it had to happen sooner or later, but it still came as a bit of a shock. Perhaps this is the start of some Lambert backlash?  Who would have thunk it after his awesome performance of "Mad World" a couple of weeks ago?

As always, there were the filler lame things we had to sit through before we actually got to the results. There was a video of the contestants making a cake together for Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta's birthdays, which quickly devolved into a food fight, wherein the over-18 men chased 16-year-old Allison around the house and shoved cake in her face, which, yknow, wasn't creepy in the slightest.

There were also performances from Natalie Cole, who looked like she had just had a visit from the Botox Fairy, Jamie Foxx, who might as well have just set the Autotune machine to autopilot and sat his ass down, and Taylor Hicks, who was faaaaar less annoying than I remember him being during his victorious run on Season 5, though I was nervous the entire time that he was going to bust out with a "Soul Patrol, Soul Patrol!" (he never did).

Tuesday marks Rock Week, with Slash as a guest mentor. Let's keep our fingers crossed for an Axl Rose cameo!
