When life gives you lemons...
An old friend of mine heard this from one of our Catholic school teachers back in the day and we both agreed that the saying was so annoying, it made us want to kick that teacher in the crotch.
But if there's a person out there making lemonade, it's Bernard Khoury.
Khoury, who was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1968, studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and then moved on to get a Master of Architectural Studies degree at Harvard University. He now runs his firm, DW5 in his hometown and is fast becoming the hottest architect known world-wide.
Khoury is famous for implementing bold architecture in unexpected places...like a kickass night club on the former site of a refugee camp in Beirut.
The idea sounds trivial, but the man's got vision.
He believes in the healing power of architecture and has built other posh clubs, restaurants and apartment buildings in the midst of the civil war-torn Beirut. The structures are modern and gorgeous, often aggressively asserting an otherwise decrepit area as valuable. He often refers to his projects as "interventions" and will present a lecture about his work and philosophies tonight at the ASU downtown campus.
