If you grew up in the West, you’re probably pretty hungry for space. With our ranch-style homes, big back yards and seemingly endless desert, we’re sensitive to the way our walls block us from that which we crave.

Such is the focus of a discussion, curated by local artists Steven Yazzie and Sue Chenoweth, that focuses on three artists’ work with recreation of space. Paul Easter, a high school senior, talks about his nature-inspired landscape paintings. Then, Alison Rainey, Director at [merz]project chats about architecture and urban design as well as her recent private home remodel that was named the 2008 Home of the Year by the American Institute of Architects. And certainly not to be forgotten, Matthew Moore, recent recipient of the prestigious 2008 Creative Capital Visual Arts grant, will explore his incredible aerial photos of his agricultural land installations – fields with planted crops manipulated to resemble suburban scapes.

The range of experience, medium and artistic practice is sure to create a new mental space for us to relish.

Tuesday, October 7th, 7-8 p.m., Stage 2 Theater at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts builidng, 7380 E. 2nd Street, Scottsdale. 480-874-4666, www.smoca.org .
