Five Fierce Locals Bands to Play Free Music Fest

By Niki D’Andrea

What do you get when you combine squids, daughters, cunning, and green? An awesome local music festival, that’s what.

On Saturday, June 7, Budweiser, Zia Records, and radio station the EDGE 103.9 present the “FBC Music Fest” at Tempe Marketplace, featuring local acts Attack of the Giant Squid, Isle of Essence, Daughters of Fission, Cunning as Folk, and Fred Green.

Attack of the Giant Squid plays an eclectic array of instruments, from laptops and saxophones to organ and vibraphones, to create ambient compositions that sound like New Age music on a beautiful bender. Set time: 8 p.m.

Isle of Essence makes a rock cocktail out of funky grooves, jazzy guitar progressions, and soulful singing. Set time: 9 p.m.

Daughters of Fission

Daughters of Fission takes hard rock and tilts it on its head, adding elements of prog rock and intellectual metal odysseys akin to bands like Isis and Zozobra. Set time: 10 p.m.

Cunning as Folk is aptly named, as the duo blends low-key folk sounds with haunting harmonies and claims their “music is based around ancient writings and the power of one's authority beyond the veil.” Set time: 10:45 p.m.

Fred Green has long been one of the East Valley’s grooviest rock/ska fusion bands, and they bring a party vibe with them wherever they go. Set time: 11 p.m.

Admission to the festival is FREE, but donations would be cool, since this is a benefit for the Foundation for Blind Children. There will also be an art sale between sets, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting FBC.
