Go ahead and jump: Van Halen to tour with David Lee Roth

Tue Aug 07, 2007 at 07:31:29 PM

By Niki D'Andrea
Three sources have now confirmed the latest Van Halen hype: the band is reuniting with original singer David Lee Roth and embarking on a 50-date tour this October. (The sources are Web sites Melodicrock.com, BillBoard.com, and MSN.com).

While some fans' initial reactions will no doubt be orgasmic joy and a rabid hunger for tickets once the dates are announced next week, my reaction holds about as much enthusiasm as a death row inmate walking to the gurney for a lethal injection.

I hate Van Halen, all incarnations. I think the band is second only to U2 in terms of bloated and largely undeserved accolades. Both bands are tired dinosaurs still feeding off the fauna of their glory days. Van Halen hasn't had a platinum album since 1995's Balance, and hasn't had a top 20 single in the U.S. since “Finish What Ya Started” in 1988. Hell, they haven't even recorded an album of new material since 1998's Van Halen III. That's almost a ten-year lapse. And while Roth has been invited back into the fold again, there have been no rumors of a new album in the works. So why tour?

Money, of course. The band's last tour (in 2004 with Sammy Hagar) grossed almost $40 million. With Roth back on the mic, Van Halen will probably make an even larger roll of dough with this upcoming tour. The novelty of this tour being Roth's first shows with the band since its 1984 epoch will undoubtedly spur many fans to shell out for tickets. And really, I don't blame them. They wanna hear the VH classics and see the legendary Roth showmanship. Fair enough. But there are two things to consider before cracking open the ol' wallet for Ticketmonster, er, Ticketmaster.

I'd like to start by taking bets on whether or not this reunion tour will even happen. Remember in 1996, when Roth strode onstage with Van Halen at the MTV Video Music Awards, and everybody got all excited because he'd recorded two songs in the studio with the band? That whole incident smacked of a reunion that never happened, with Roth claiming he'd been led to believe he was going to rejoin the group but had been used for a publicity stunt, and Eddie Van Halen claiming something to the effect that Roth was an egotistical attention whore. That's like Cher accusing Michael Jackson of having too much plastic surgery. Does anybody really believe that Roth and the Van Halens are going to get along for more than a week? Hell, all the bitching between the two factions in 1996 happened backstage at the MTV Video Music Awards, mere moments after the group traipsed offstage. If these guys' egos can't co-exist for 50 minutes, how're they going to stand each other for 50 tour dates?

Secondly, David Lee Roth is the only member in this reunion whose last name is not Van Halen. In addition to brothers Eddie and Alex, original bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by Eddie's teenage son, Wolfgang. The circumstances surrounding Anthony's departure do not appear to be amicable -- in a March 2006 interview with Japanese rock mag Burrn!, Anthony claimed that Eddie and Alex would only allow him to be involved with the 2004 Van Hagar reunion if he agreed to a sizeable pay cut. Who knows how much (or even if) Wolfgang Van Halen is being paid, but anybody who says his skill as a bass player is even remotely comparable to a vet like Michael Anthony's has been taking too many hits off Eddie Van Halen's pipe dreams. With Eddie and Alex continually demonstrating their musical megalomania and kicking anybody to the curb who doesn't bow down to their wishes, it's pretty obvious why Wolfgang's filling Anthony's spot: Eddie Van Halen is his father, and therefore, he will do as he's told in every matter. And if David Lee Roth thought he was outnumbered before, he's in for an even harder time now.

But the worst thing Van Halen could do here is hike up ticket prices for its shows, which they will undoubtedly do (they did it for the '04 reunion with Sammy Hagar). Most people look at Van Halen and see a legendary band whose first three albums should be included in any list of "Great American Rock Albums." I look at Van Halen and see a band that's been desperately seeking relevance for the last decade. But perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe it's not contemporary relevance Van Halen is seeking, after all. Maybe it's just the money.

Mr. Pete says:

How old is Niki? 12? Since when do bands with two diamond-certified albums (10 million or more) have to be current on the charts or best buddies to do a Reunion Tour for their fans?

Ever hear of Pink Floyd? Queen? The Police? Robert Plant and Jimmy Page? The Doobie Brothers?

Hey Niki - Lindsay Lohan called. She wants her coke snorter back.

Niki says:

Thanks for reading, Mr. Pete. I can tell you're a Van Halen fan. Yes, the band does have two diamond albums (and they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year). What I was trying to say is that I think the band's overrated (Michael Jackson's got diamond albums, too) and that egos and not music will be the major factor in this reunion.

I love Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and the Doobie Brothers. I also love the Doors, the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, and many other classic rock bands that I have and would pay good money to see.

And I don't do coke.

Ed Fury says:

Man, you can tell when "news" can be most highly trusted to be factual: when confirmed by Melodicrock.com.

By the way, who would make for a better live show? Van Halen, with David Lee Roth, or Tesla, whose album "Five Man Acoustical Jam" is "one of the best live albums ever recorded"?

Just wondering.

Corbin says:

agreed, van halen needs to go away.

but c'mon! your logic is laughable. say what you will about the van halens but they are a family of musicians. little wolfie, even at 8 years old, has to have a leg up on michael anthony. keep in mind, anthony wasn't a "vet" when he recorded the first album.

and what's wrong with doing it for money? you write for free? you do it for the love? you seem to coast through most of your articles. so what if van halen coasts through this tour.

nice try, sistah girl, but leave the real writing to pros like matt neff and lilia what's-her-face.

Leonard says:

I think Nikki writes for the abuse. I'm not a huge Van Halen fan but this blog was a bit harsh. David lee roth touring with the band is a big deal and lots of bands tour just for the money. but nikki does write well and she expresses a strong opinion. she needs to remember that having an opinion will get her shit from people who don't agree and not bother defending herself. that's pro.

Mark Anthony says:

David Lee Roth is an egomanic and not a nice person to be around. His arrogence is legendary. Sammy Hagar on the other hand is the type of dude who is freindly and who you would like to party with down in cabo wabo. David is a one tone voice. Sammy has range. Sammy Hagar belongs in this band. Not Roth. I know that if they do make it through the tour i can guarantee they will never work together again. Bottom line is david lee roth is a prick and no one likes him as a person. Most people cant stand to be in the same room with him for more than three minutes. I think sammy is the better singer. The better person. I hate roth. I have seen video on youtube.com regarding the sammy/dave tour. Watch it and you will see for yourself how big of an asshole david lee roth really is. Also Sammy should stay solo after the way Edward Van Halen treated him. They shit all over him cause he would only fly to L.A. for one day to tape Humans Beings song for twister soundtrack. Sammys wife was pregnant and about to give birth and they insisted he leave his wifes side. I think personally, edward van halen is responsibe for the demise of that band. Sammy should never have left. And looking back those first few albums with roth are really sounding dated with the exception of a few tunes. The sammy era however is really standing up to the test of time. Peace.

Jerry says:

I've met Sammy Hagar, and I have to agree he's one of the most down to earth, cool musicians out there. A real upstanding guy.

I have "no comment" on the rest of Van Halen.

Guitarman says:

I have loved this band for over 20 years, but since Sam left the band in 1996 they have been somewhat of a joke. Unless you know what happend with managers and behind the scenes stories I have read and they are out there on the net believe me. Sam even wrote an unreleased book on the subject.

I agree with Niki. There is alot of truth to what she is saying. Alot more than you or even she might know. If you do more digging you will find out some things about Van Halen that might shock you.

Anyway, Van Halen will not be getting anymore of my money unless the members include Mike Anthony in the line-up. That's it and that's all. They have yanked my chain for the last time with this!

Roy says:

Van Halen is NOT overrated.
Alex = great drummer
Eddie = best guitar player EVER
Wolfgang = according to Eddie awesome
Dave = you gotta love that guy
Mikey = aaah, those backing vocals...:)
Sam = AWESOME singer
Gary = great singer too

VAN HALEN ROCKS!!!!!!!!

jackie says:

I can't believe Van Halen blew the opportunity for a genuine reunion by replacing Michael with that fat slob wolfgang. Eddie's nepotism is nausiating. That kid should be doing laps or weight watcher commercials with his mom , not taking the stage with the likes of David Lee Roth.

M. Maggs says:

It is sad to me that this is happening without Michael Anthony.

I will say I saw the Roth/Hagar show a couple years ago and Hagar truly kicked Roth's Ass.

He was amazing. Roth was just arrogant and the crowd new it.

It seems that Eddie is just arrogant also, considering they didn't even bother to have a true reunion tour and telling Michael to go screw. This is just poor.

Dick Kumzinya says:

I liked Van Halen much better with Sammy. He is a far better vocalist than DLR, and the show isn't all about him, as it always appeared to be with DLR. However, I do think that DLR was a better songwriter than Sammy. At least according to the credits you see on songs. Who knows if he really helped write them or if Eddie felt obligated to put DLR name on them.

Sammy is touring with the Cabos very soon. And he has Michael Anthony in his band now. So if you like Sammy and Michael, check out if they are playing a city near you. They will definitely be worth seeing.

Mike Levin says:

Anyone who was of album-buying age when the first VH album was released will be chomping at the bit to see Roth with the band.

Hagar may be a technically better singer, but the material the band put out with him as a frontman sucked, plain and simple. Lame ass pop music. From what I've seen, the only people who really like the "Van Hagar" material are those who were still listening to Barney the Dinosaur when Women and Children First came out. The original lineup was a much rowdier, and far more fun sound. Good music to get drunk by.

I think Michael Anthony got royally screwed, but apparently with Eddie you have to pick a side, and Anthony picked Sammy's. Guess which tour's going to be more lucrative?

On the bright side, the Van Halens are a highly musical family and I'm interested to see if Wolfgang lives up to the family name.

Nobody loves Van Halen MORE than me, but there is no way in HELL I would pay the gouging prices I have seen listed for this show, not without MIKE , that is. Ticketmaster has no listing yet, but there are full schedules at a few other sites and prices are ranging from 140 bucks for terrible seats to almost 1200 bucks for floor seats. Can stadiums actually be filled by pallid, bloated executive types with fake hair and fake tans and their spa lizard trophy wives ???? The ones that can afford to see this show are the anti-thesis of Rock and Roll. Instead of finding roaches and empty Jack Danial pints on the floor after the show, the clean up crew will probably be picking up Rolex's and diamond tennis bracelets... What a sham! I wish I could afford to see it, but I guess being a loyal fan for 30 years gets you nothing more than a kick in the ass. I would love to hear other fans thoughts on the insanity of ticket prices.

Roy Brown says:

VH reunion without MA?
Tickets are too high, way too high!
Roth is a great frontman however......

KnowItAll says:

I'd rather spend $140 on gas and food than a nosebleed seat for a version of Van Halen that's still not the full original lineup.

Adios! says:

I've been there since the very beginning -- got every album, know every song, been to the concerts -- but when the soul goes, when INTEGRITY has left the building, when two great guys like Sammy and Michael are treated so poorly -- F--- it ! -- I'm done !

Rob says:

I am with you Beamer Reamer, have never seen VH and am not about to at $140 for a nose bleed ticket. Could not believe it when I saw the floor seating prices, $1800 for front row. I always go to Motorhead when they show up, been around longer, doin it harder and louder and for about $30 last time I saw em, and Lemmy puts on a show.
