Idol Weirdness

Categories: Up On Sun

A strange email came to us lately that's just so out there I've got to share it with you... this is what it said:

Can a dead man win the American Idol songwriter contest? Maybe...

I was co-writer with the late Kurt Mayberry. (research NT archives for Kurt Mayberry or Strum & Hum)

We have just entered the American Idol songwriters contest together.
I have sent along our entry, "Happy Song".

Would love to hear your comments.

Clark D. Lough
"Confetti Drop"

Mayberry died in 1995 of an apparent cocaine overdose according to the old New Times article found here. He was a local musician of some renown and also owned the legendary Sun Club. Anyway, the song's called "Happy Song," and you can listen to it here:

Hi Clark,

I never said anything about Strum and Hum - I only specifically mentioned "Happy Song". This song was written while Jasmine and I were still around, not during the Strum & Hum years. In your response, I see that you do not mention who wrote Happy Song, so I have to assume that my point is proven. This might have been a song that you all performed and re-recorded, but I am almost certain that this song was written by my father. I have hundreds of notepads (that yellow lined paper) with all of the lyrics my dad ever sang, Happy Song being one of them.

Either way, like the writer of this article, the fact that this topic has even come up is "so out there". I have seen hundreds of video of my dad performing solo, so with your arguments, I am surprised that there is no footage of Strum and Hum playing this song, or any others in fact. All I have heard are overproduced recordings with vocals & garage band instrumentation overlaid on top of Kurt's vocals and guitar playing (my father).

I am sorry, but it is very hard for me to believe you when you say that you wrote all of the lyrics, when I have pages and pages of song lists from years that Jasmine & I were not around, of songs that I also have all of the lyrics to in his handwriting.

I hope you can understand my being protective - There are many people out there who try and contact me every other year asking for me to sign over rights to them so that they can re-record his music. It's not going to happen, sorry. The Strum and Hum songs I am not interested in, only "Happy Song". Like Peter also hinted at, the song is familiar, because it was written and performed solo, before S&H.
