Annie Sprinkle as "goddess of ceremonies" at Alwun House.
I didn't mind that my girlfriend went to look at Annie Sprinkle's cervix, but I honestly wasn't all that interested. There were so many other things going on at the Alwun House Friday night during the "Phantasmagorical Spectacular" opening of their annual Exotic Art Show that seeing a famous porn star and sex educator's reproductive organs with a speculum and flash light was only mildly exciting.

Sprinkle was "goddess of ceremonies" for this year's bacchanal at Alwun House, a non-profit arts organization in central Phoenix that hosts an Exotic Art Show every year full of erotic paintings and statues, two outdoor bars, a buffet of hors d'ouevres, and two stages with everything from burlesque and drag queen performances to live jazz music swooning with sexy saxophones. Best of all, it draws several hundred people, many of whom dress up in sexy, revealing outfits or detailed, imaginative costumes.

Real Deal Pro Wrestling at El Gran Mercado

Hatchet Jack tries to get out of a choke hold.
"KICK HIS ASS, DAD!"

It was Saturday afternoon in the arena at El Gran Mercado, and the young woman next to me was maniacally snapping photos and cheering on her father, a bald, tattooed, grizzly pro wrestler named Hatchet Jack. He was in the wrestling ring with five other guys, competing with his partner, Pitbull, for the Real Deal Pro Wrestling Tag Team Championship (they lost).

El Gran Mercado's a swap meet frequented by large families, so it's not unusual to hear kids yelling for their parents. But things like "KILL HIM, DAD!" are more common on Saturdays, when Real Deal Pro Wrestling holds its weekly matches for a measly $1.

The Napoloen Brings a Swanky Cigar Lounge to Old Town Scottsdale

Part of the interior lounge at The Napoleon.
In the 1958 noir crime film Touch of Evil, classic movie actress Marlene Dietrich made a comeback as a cigar-smoking bordello madam. Dietrich's hard-cut elegance blended brilliantly with the setting -- a shadowy, secret world where thrills always came kicking around corners.

Now, picture a place like that in Old Town Scottsdale (without the famous actress and prostitutes), because on January 28, The Napoleon opens on Stetson Drive with a deft blend of '40s and '50s style and an exclusive, posh bent.

Naughty & Spice Party at Afterlife

Naughty Santa girls get prepped for the party at Afterlife
As of December 24, five chemical compounds used in smoking blends known as "spice" are federally banned. So of course, somebody had to throw one last spice party in the Valley. The night before Christmas Eve day, that's exactly what a Scottsdale club called Afterlife did, hosting a smoky fete dubbed the "Naughty & Spice" party.

This was our first visit to Afterlife, and right away, we were impressed with the club décor. The upstairs area where the spice party was held houses several rooms. In front of the main bar area, there was a foggy dance floor, complete with a platform dancer cage where tan ladies danced in fuzzy red-and-white bras, garter belts, and Santa hats. There was a second dance floor around the corner from the bar, and between the two dance floors, a room with a huge bed and an adult swing hovering above it.

But the crowd at Afterlife's "Naughty & Spice" party didn't include very many older "adults" -- probably because there was no alcohol being served, so the 18-and-over crowd took over.

BS West "IV Thursdays"

I'm gay, but I don't like most gay bars. Generally, lesbians go to lesbian bars to hook up with their future stalkers, or they go to gay boy bars to either feel out of place or hit on straight chicks who're there with their gay friends (oops).

But BS West is different. This cozy gay bar in old town Scottsdale is more of a hang out spot than a hookup place, and on Thursdays, they host "IV Thursdays," a weekly filled with goth, industrial, and alternative music videos. We went last week and had a blast.

We had some trouble finding the bar, since it's tucked away in a shopping plaza off Fifth Avenue. If you haven't been to BS West before, we recommend parking somewhere near Fifth Avenue and Marshall Way and following the pairs of guys holding hands.

Medical Marijuana Election Night Party at Alice Cooper'stown

Categories: Niki at Nite

votepro203_550.jpg
When last call came to Alice Cooper'stown last night, Prop 203, Arizona's medical marijuana bill, was losing by less than one percent of the vote margin. But the advocates and proponents who gathered at the downtown "rock and jock" restaurant behind US Airways Center were prepared for passage of medical pot by a landslide. You could tell by all the budding businesspeople there, handing out free T-shirts for would-be local dispensaries and an upcoming Arizona medical marijuana magazine.

Cooper'stown's spacious patio was decorated with red, white, and blue balloons and "Yes! On Prop 203" signs. There was a buffet table featuring sliced meat on a platter and a circular dish of carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli, with a dollop of dressing in the center. There were also plastic bottles of bubbles favors on some tables. Everybody seemed in a great mood at the beginning of the night. By the end, a lot of people were nervous.

A Crumpled Kiddie Pool and Pile of Wet Towels: Signs of Nude Jell-O Wrestling at Steel Horse Saloon

Imagine two women wrestling in this.
Sunday night, I was surrounded by scruffy looking biker dudes in denim vests and do rags, drinking $2 Pabst Blue Ribbons and listening to the Rolling Stones "Paint it Black" on the jukebox. It was the sort of experience I expected in a biker bar located in a west side strip mall -- in this case, Steel Horse Saloon near 18th Avenue and Bell Road.

The only reason I was there was to watch the all female, almost nude jello wrestling I'd been reading about on SHS's web site and Facebook page. Although I lived in this area for about four years when I was a college student at ASU West, I'd never been to Steel Horse Saloon before.

I had, however, participated in a fierce Jell-O wrestling competition in a friend's backyard ten years ago. We dumped 30 pounds of lime Jell-O from Luby's into an inflatable kiddie pool (shaped like a pirate ship), and six of us slam danced in green slime for two hours. I was interested to see how the gelatinous action at Steel Horse Saloon compared.

Margaret Cho Shows Off Her Ink

Margaret Cho, after getting a peony tattoo on her shoulder.

This past Saturday night, we had the pleasure of meeting comedian Margaret Cho after her hilarious show at Dodge Theatre. Cho was also meeting with several fans, so we only had a few minutes with her, but it was time well spent because she talked about her numerous tattoos.

Cho, 41, didn't get her first tattoo until she was 35. She'd wanted to get one her whole life, and now she's amassed tattoos all over her body -- on her arms, her legs, her ribs, and her back. To Cho, tattoos are symbols of self-expression and self-love, particularly on women. "It's a celebration of feeling good about your body," she says. "I think women with tattoos are very empowered."

Cho's ink is so important to her that she didn't mind giving us an enthusiastic tour of her tattoos, even though there were 20 people with cameras behind us, waiting to meet her. Read on for a description of Cho's elaborate body art, done by a variety of notable artists.

The Instant Classics back up bar patrons at Blue Martini Lounge.
Blue Martini Lounge is the coolest place I've been to in Scottsdale's CityNorth, which says a lot, considering the Arizona Pop Culture Museum is also there.

But after a long day at work, the relaxed atmosphere and fun vibes at Blue Martini's weekly "I'm with the Band" karaoke were just what I needed on a Monday night.

Wild & Wet Wednesday at The Dirty Dogg Saloon

Thirsty? How about a wet T-shirt contest?
Usually, the party is at the bar, but at The Dirty Dogg Saloon in Scottsdale, the party's on the bar -- especially on "Wild & Wet Wednesday," when the club holds its weekly wet T-shirt contests.

When we walked in around 11:30 last night, two tanned, athletic women in tight, skimpy shorts and half-shirts were dancing on the bar, vigorously shaking their boobs, grinding their hips, and swinging from the bar rafters.

Several women work and dance at Dirty Dogg. It keeps a crowd by the bar. While guys wait for their $2 Tecate beers, they also get an eyeful of gams.

Once the wet T-shirt contest starts around midnight, they'll also get plenty wet.
