Surfing Reddit when you're a Reddit amateur is a lot like trying to figure out why your iPhone randomly shuts off in a Juggalo forum -- you rarely find what you're looking for, but you're likely to find something else worth sharing.

Exhibit A: The Grumpy Cattoo.

Ink Up: Phoenix Voted the Nation's Tattoo Capital

Categories: Marked, News
tatrisingphx.jpg
If you've been thinking about adding a few words, portraits, or hipsterific symbols (we hear the fox is up and coming) to your skin's permanent collection, you're not alone.

In December, daily deal machine LivingSocial asked residents across the country to weigh in on their own city's vanity and lifestyle choices. The result: Phoenix residents have the most ink.

The survey, conducted by Mandala Research, also put Phoenix in the top five in the "most superficial," "level of vanity," and "number of residents with breast implants," categories in the country. Classy.

Kate Benjamin's Cat Woman, Inked

By day, Phoenix's Cat Woman goes by Kate Benjamin, owner of the online Modern Cat Studio and advocate of all things Grand Avenue.

She was featured in our Best of Phoenix 2010 for her keen sense of cat style and her seeming superpowers in the downtown scene.

This week, she got inked.

Benjamin took her superhero illustration drawn by Anthony Pugh and went to Heather Alvin of Lady Luck Tattoo (a studio neighbor of hers at Bragg's Pie Factory). Read our interview with Benjamin from last May and check out her Superhero inspiration right here.

Age: I am 23 now and got my first tattoo (the doodle one) at 19.

My Upper Back Piece: Is actually in honor of my wonderful mother Sue Chenoweth who is a painter and teacher. I didn't want to get her actual artwork tattooed on me but I love the random doodles that she does.

She sometimes doodles super symmetrical, often pointless designs, in order to concentrate on what is in front of her. Whether she's at a lecture or talking on the phone she doodles.

For about a year I snatched all of the doodles I could find by her on random pieces of scratch paper from around our house and chose one for a tattoo.

John Robert Scott's Family History

Name: John Robert Scott

Age: 31; 28 When I got the tattoo

My Sleeve: I had the tattoo done in Dallas by an artist named Jack Hatchet out of his personal shop which he moved to Philadelphia weeks after completing my arm.

The story behind the tattoo sleeve is somewhat humorous based on the fact that my mother hates tattoos and cried when I showed her my first one, yet she is very proud of this one because of its many religious symbols, as well as a tribute to her, our culture and my own life, all in one.

Age: Currently 31; I've been getting tattoos since I was 19.

My Sleeve: Is a New Orleans funeral march, and a tribute to my chihuahua, Ruby, who died in 2008.

It was designed by Chris Rupp of Living Ghost, who incorporated a few of the animals I wanted as well as a few things of Ruby's (like her favorite neon pink mouse toy). It took 7 months to complete.

My Arm Piece: I got the outline of the Golden Rectangle and Spiral on my right arm back in October with Heather at Lady Luck Tattoo Gallery. My whole life, I've tended to possess a very Type-A personality (i.e. massive control freak), and felt most comfortable when certain levels of predictability existed.

For that reason, math has always been a favorite subject of mine, and always loved different patterns and shapes that can be derived from simple equations. This shape signifies how something that appears quite basic can grow to something very complex and remarkable -- something that can be equated to many things in life.

Name: Kyle Hague

Age: 31; I got my first tattoo at 18 and the figures on my arms at 25.

My Arm Pieces: Come from an obscure kids' poetry book called In Malta that I came across years ago.

The book itself is awful but the illustrations were really striking and minimalist.

I wish I still remembered the illustrator's name but I can't even seem to find any trace that the book ever actually existed. The figures get a lot of response and interest from all types of strangers which was really uncomfortable at first, but it's grown on me.

Name: Chanelle Richardson
Age
: 29 years old and I had my blackbird tattoos done this year.

My Arm Pieces: I have three red winged blackbirds on one inner forearm, and a fourth blackbird perched in a tree on the other. Together they tell a collective story of freedom and truth.

I chose four birds because I am a "four" in the enneagram, a model of personality types. Fours tend to be free spirits, and blackbirds signify this for me.

The tree represents unchanging solidarity -- a place to call home, which for me is truth. Truth is found in inner freedom.
