It may be cliche, but are you really going to pass up the opportunity to wave at the President?

Jackalope Ranch is hitting the road this summer -- and you're coming, too. Well, sort of. With Going Places, our writers recommend the best things to do and see during your travels.

We feel like we shouldn't have to convince you to visit Washington, D.C. It's our nation's capital, it's where the laws of our land are made, and President Obama's house is there. But don't be fooled; there's much more to D.C. than politics and history.

Jackalope Ranch is hitting the road this summer -- and you're coming, too. Well, sort of. With Going Places, our writers recommend the best things to do and see during your travels.

A picturesque tiny town with a history as rich as the mine that made it famous, Bisbee has a storied past every bit as present as the array of artists and aging hippies who have turned this two-lane stretch into a tourist destination.

Parent Hood: Three Sights to See with Your Kids over Holiday Break in Metro Phoenix

Categories: Going Places

Steve Wiley is Jackalope Ranch's Parent Hood. He's a slightly unorthodox father of five who will weigh in weekly with his mildly-rebellious views and observations. If you'd like to see how he came to write this column, watch the intro video. This week he weighs with three things to do with your kids over break.

In just a few days, your kids are going to be home on Christmas break. All day long. In your house. Eating. Fighting. Slacking off. Eating (with two growing sons, I have to say "eating" twice). Making you slightly nuts.

If you don't want those two weeks to feel like two months, and you aren't one of those parents that lets electronic babysitters do all of your work for you, than you'd better find something to do with them.

Never fear, the ol' Parent Hood is here with three cool, relatively cheap (or free) ideas to get you and your wall-climbing children out of the house.

La Caminata Theme Park in Mexico Gives Visitors a Chance to "Cross" a Simulated Border

If you've ever wondered what it's like to cross the US/Mexico Border in the middle of the night with few resources and a lot of trust in a guide, the experience now yours for $20.

Caminata Nocturna (or "night hike') is a theme park in the town of El Alberto, Mexico -- just a few hours outside of Mexico City.

But unlike "The Happiest Place on Earth," a run from the haunted boogie man, or a typical visit to a rollercoaster-packed thrill site, La Caminata offers visitors the chance to experience a few hours of running around in the desert with hopes of making it to the "other side" -- without the actual chance of getting caught, risking their well-being, or losing their lives.

It's summertime, which means it's the perfect chance to make an exodus from the Valley, either by hitting the open road or jetting off to somewhere cool. Over the next few weeks, Jackalope Ranch will profile a few unique destinations around Arizona and the southwest that are perfect places for a daytrip or a weekend getaway.

Santa Barbara knows how to keep it beautiful.
It's time to address what Phoenicians have zipped up and neglected in the closet -- their suitcases. Right about now, Arizonans need a refreshing destination like the one between the Pacific Ocean and Santa Ynez Mountains. Here is the city of Santa Barbara.

The first-class beach town offers opportunities for both energetic and relaxed vacationers. Visitors can go jet-skiing, windsurfing and kayaking -- or a beach chair, lounge in the sand and soak in the scenery. A quick excursion to the seaside city serves as a much-deserved break.

A Day in Globe/Miami

If the local lore of Globe is to be believed, the tiny mining town located northeast of the Valley got its name almost by accident.

Hardscrabble prospectors of the 1870s came to the areas with dreams of digging up gold, only to find globe-like deposits of silver instead. More than 130 years later, both Globe and the neighboring community of Miami still offer plenty of hidden treasures, and we ain't talking about the massive amounts of copper that's still mined here.

Jerome, Arizona: Home to hippies, hepcats, artists...and maybe a few ghosts.
Perched in the hills surrounding the picturesque Verde Valley, Jerome is a quaint and quirky destination around 100 miles north of Phoenix that offers plenty of personality and charm, not to mention more than its fair share of colorful characters (and maybe even some spirits) lurking about.

An old copper boomtown dating back to the 1880s, Jerome is a town with a notorious past, where ornery miners and wicked varmints walked its streets and stalked its alleyways in search of brothels, speakeasies, and other illicit thrills.

More than a century later, the town still bustles with life. It's become a vibrant and artsy landscape and a popular daytrip destination where visitors can explore historic structures, partake in funky art galleries and unique boutiques, and get an eyeful of panoramic views. A number of buildings are also supposedly haunted, so you might just spy a ghost or two.

The Southwest Cucumber at Roxy's Great Escape

Since there's really no better accessory than a cocktail in your hand, each week brings you a tasty adult beverage from one of our favorite drinking establishments, complete with recipe.

This week: The Southwest Cucumber at Roxy's Great Escape.

Roxy's Great Escape is our new (not-so-)secret hideaway. Tucked away in a strip mall off Indian School between 40th and 44th streets, it's buzzing with the liveliness of an awesome neighborhood bar: A game of Yahtzee is being played at one end and another crowd of regulars is at the other. One guy mistakes us for his friend and gives us a big side hug. We already like it here.

Behind the bar, Holly whips up a spicy shooter she calls a Southwest Cucumber. The name says it all: Refreshing with a good 'ol Tabasco zing. Can you be as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce? Bonus points if you get the reference... Click through to find out.

(Recipe after the jump.)
