Hottsdale
The YouTube trailer for a Scottsdale-based reality television show, un-originally (and uh, well, somewhat inaccurately) titled Hottsdale, has been making its way around the internet.

First, a few answers for the guaranteed questions:
- Yes, it's a real concept.
- Yes, they've successfully lured a cast of actors, er, real life people to act, er, live out their lives in Scottsdale in front of the cameras.
- Yes, that is a tribal tattoo.

Wacky Willy's Hash Machine at Herb N Legend

Wacky Willy's hash machine, as advertised on the company's website.
Head shops aren't known for their appliances, but we recently stumbled upon something at local store Herb N Legend that might change that: a top-loading, mini-washing machine...for making hash.

The machine, made by a Canadian company called Wacky Willy's, looks like a plastic toy appliance. It's only about three feet high, and holds around five gallons of water.

People have been making their own hash for decades, often using something as primitive as a large spoon to separate trichomes from pot leaves in water. But devices like the Wacky Willys washing machine makes the whole process a lot easier, and faster.

Tuck-N-Toke: A Pipe for Extreme Conditions

The Tuck-N-Toke

For smokers, there's nothing worse than not being able to light a cigarette in extreme conditions. And when you're halfway up the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff during January, flicking your Bic won't do the trick.

Enter the Tuck-N-Toke, a new smoking device created by native Arizonan Scott Gwilliam. Gwilliam's a lifelong skiing and snowboarding enthusiast, and a smoker, too. He says the idea for the Tuck-N-Toke came to him when he was alone on the Alberta ski lift. He took off his gloves and goggles and went through a futile process of trying to light his smoke with windproof lighters, even tucking his head inside his jacket. Nothing worked.

"Very few windproof lighters work at 6,000 feet," Gwilliam says. "Ones that do work are $50 to $100 a piece. I've been skiing since I was eight, and my father and I both experienced problems with windproof lighters...Tuck-N-Toke is pretty much an extension of your mouth. [With regular lighters in wind] you take a lighter and your cigarette, and tuck it down by your stomach to see if the lighter works. So why don't we use something that's an extension of your mouth and shielded by your body?"

Here's how it's supposed to work: The Tuck-N-Toke is a single hookah hose device with a bowl on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. Smokers pack the bowl with whatever they're smoking. Once the bowl's lit, it will theoretically stay lit, and can be smoked or used to light cigarettes, etc.

Wooden Vaginas and Baby Bottles: The Six Worst Custom Pipes Ever (NSFW)

A baby bottle bong
Custom pipes and bongs can be beautiful, almost approaching "high art" in their craftsmanship. But like any medium, there's always going to be a handful of abominations good for only gasps and giggles. It's baffling enough that somebody would want to make something like a combination sex toy/pipe, but even more confounding that people actively seek out and buy stuff like that -- for a lot of money, sometimes.

From genitalia sculptures to pediatric materials recycling, here are six of the worst custom pipes ever.

Baby bottle bongs: Stoners have been recycling things to make pipes for years -- cardboard toilet paper rolls, aluminum cans, apples, baby food jars, beer bottles -- but perhaps the most disturbing D.I.Y. pipes are the ones made from real baby bottles, with straws or hoses for mouth pieces. Maybe it's not so bad when someone goes to the store and buys new, clear bottles to use, but recycled baby bottle bongs are just bizarre. Especially when they've got butterflies or stars or some other kiddie theme on them. Not to mention, it makes us think of adult babies (among other things).

Drug Roundup: The latest on Spice, Bath Salts, Europa, and Kratom

When Huey Lewis sang "I Want a New Drug" back in 1984, he may have simply been echoing the American penchant for "bigger, better, faster, more."

After all, that was the decade that many drug users decided cocaine wasn't a big enough kick and moved to crack.

It was also the dawn of a new era in the "War on Drugs," with Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign and the launch of new outreach programs like Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) and Partnership for a Drug-Free America.

Twenty seven years later, the market for "new drugs" is stronger than ever (and a direct result, some say, of the "War on Drugs"). Head shops and online stores offer "legal" alternatives to illegal drugs, many of which include chemical compounds synthesized in all kinds of labs.

Instead of marijuana (illegal in most places), there was spice. Instead of illegal meth and cocaine, there are dubiously packaged, so-called "bath salts" to snort. Instead of LSD, there's 2C-E. And as a substitute for heroin and opiates, there's Kratom. Every time a new designer drug or substance is made illegal, a new product with a slightly different formula emerges. Representatives for the Drug Enforcement Administration and substance abuse counselors have to admit there's no way to catch everything.

For the past two years, Phoenix New Times has covered a handful of the most popular and prominent drugs to hit the so-called "legal drug" market in the U.S. Here's a rundown of those substances, along with updates on their current legal statuses.

Kratom: An Opium Substitute from Asia Is the Latest "Legal" Drug to Hit the U.S.

The leaves of the Kratom tree: more than meets the eye.
At first glance, the dark green leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree look no more remarkable than mint leaves. They're large (up to seven inches long and four inches wide), somewhat oval in shape, and smooth to the touch. The trees are indigenous to Southeast Asia, and their leaves, known as "Kratom," are the latest popular consumables in the "legal drug" market of the U.S. Users describe the effects of ingestion as similar to a high from heroin.

"The reason it's drawn some attention is because traditionally, some natives in Thailand and Asian countries would use it as an opium substitute when opium wasn't available," says Ramona Sanchez, spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration's Phoenix branch.

Governor Jan Brewer may have brought this week's roll out of Arizona's Medical Marijuana Act to a partial halt, but that's not stopping today's grand opening of the America's first "marijuana superstore" in the Valley.

weGrow, a national retail chain that sells hydroponics equipment and marijuana growing supplies (touted by its proprietors and PR people as the "Walmart of weed"), is cutting the ribbon on its first location in the U.S. on June 1.

Camp 420 Demonstration for Legalization of Marijuana

Demonstrators for the legalization of marijuana included a Vietnam War veteran (left) and nurse Rain Baker (center).
Maybe it was the heat, or the fact that it was a week day, or maybe the marijuana smokers just forgot -- but the Camp 420 demonstration for cannabis legalization at the Arizona State Capitol yesterday was a bit of a bust. Only about 30 people showed up, but at least those who came made the most of their protest.

The mini-rally's high point came during a discussion about House Bill 2541, which could allow employers to fire medical marijuana patients based on failed drug tests and allegations from colleagues.

And the most interesting person at the rally was probably Thane Eichenauer, a guy sporting hot pink hair under his ball cap and dressed in a suit with a rainbow tie. He's running for Mayor of Phoenix (yes, really).

The New LSD: A Synthetic Substance Called 2C-E (aka "Europa") Makes a Dangerous Comeback

First, there was spice (a.k.a. "synthetic marijuana"). Then came "bath salts" that reportedly had the same effects as crystal meth when snorted.

Now, another designer drug has hit the market -- and reportedly resulted in a fatality last week.

It's a synthetic hallucinogen called 2C-E, also known as "Europa," and it reportedly has the same effects as LSD and psychedelic mushrooms. It's available for sale on the Internet, and seems popular among the under-21 raver crowd.

There's been one reported case of an overdose of 2C-E in Phoenix, but other states have seen a larger number of incidents.
