Cycle: Five Gifts for the Bike Geek

bikegiftguide.jpg
Ignore what the spouse, partner or family member of any cyclist says; cyclists are incredibly easy to shop for. Just drop by a bike shop and look for something that looks cool and it's guaranteed to be a hit (even if the recipient already has it 'cause the only thing better than owning some bike item is owning multiples).

For those of you still struggling to find that "just right" gift for the bike fanatic you're burdened with, here are five items from shops around the valley that run the gamut from fun and affordable to outright extravagant.

The ultimate for any fixie hipster looking for that last touch to set their rig apart. Cinelli has been leading the game in terms of bar wrap tape forever, and now they've partnered with tattoo and pop artist Mike Giant for this edition strewn with Giant tattoo icons. It's hard to find, but Landis Cyclery is always happy to place a quick special order in time to get the bars wrapped for a NYE bike crawl. But get it now before all of the hipsters are sporting it. Awkward!

96cover.jpg
If you act fast, you can nab a copy of the the 2011 West Issue of New American Paintings, full of work by Phoenix artists.

The bi-monthly national magazine is a juried exhibition-in-print. Each edition features the work of 40 painters, selected from thousands of applications and recommendations by a recognized curator.

No. 96 was juried by Cassandra Coblentz, Curator, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) and features work by local painter Colin Chillag on the cover.

Coblentz writes in the introduction, "the artists represented in these pages demonstrate the vitality of artistic practice in this region of the country. Boldly building upon the richness of art history, their demonstrations of reinvention and innovation are in step with the mythos of the landscape itself, which continues to serve as an important backdrop for exploring the most pressing issues and concerns we all face in the West."

Just a day after fashion fans inundated big-box retail store Target (and crashed its website) shopping the Missoni for Target line, Misty Guerriero unpacked her own Missoni fabric collection and stocked a table at her Phoenix shop, Vintage by Misty

"It's absolutely good timing," she says. "And this stuff is legit."

Guerriero says her husband just brought back the assortment of Missoni knits and silks from the biannual fabric show in Milan. She says she'll sell the fabrics in her store by the yard and her in-house tailor, Dotty, will work with customers who have specific projects in mind.

Ignorance & Ambition
Phoenix Design Week (actually a three-week event) will begin in October, and local designers are finalizing personal projects and joining efforts to raise awareness about local design and the importance of creative collaboration.

In the works, says PHXDW founder Mark Dudlik, is a pop-up Phoenix Design Museum, which will host a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of local and national design.

Last month, Dudlik opened Ignorance & Ambition, a locally sourced, online design shop where you can snag a few goods that'll support the museum (and the design community).

Atherton|Keener's Meadowbrook Residence is for Sale (and the Architects are Staying in Phoenix)

After meeting in architecture school and completing a number of projects together, Cy Keener and Jay Atherton built a space of their own in uptown Phoenix.

They called it the Meadowbrook Residence, which became well-known in the neighborhood for its unique use of material (cement, wood, concrete block, and outdoor screens) as well as its simple aesthetic and use of natural light. And then it landed the cover of Dwell magazine's Dec/Jan 2011 issue.

This afternoon, the house was listed for sale on the Modern Phoenix website, though Keener promises that the duo is staying in town.

"To me, [Meadowbrook] remains one of the most powerful spaces in Phoenix," he says. "And we hope it goes to someone who appreciates it."

When Weston Henry returned to Phoenix after a stint in Albuquerque, he had a renewed passion to explore the city.

He rode his bike around town with a camera in tow, photographed the spots that made him fall in love with the pavement paradise, and quickly noticed that most of his shots were of local pieces of graffiti.

"It's the way the colors and the graphics and the bold letters transformed into something else," Henry says. "I've always been drawn to that, and I guess that's why I started taking pictures of [graffiti]."

Since we checked in with Phoenix designer Eric Torres in January, he's been busy mapping Rynaga.

Rynaga is Torres's world -- a narrated, illustrated environment he's created for fantastic creatures with real life stories (think Tolkien, Homer, and Lewis Carol with a more comic feel).

The World of Rynaga Explorer's Map is the result of 5 years of research, writing, planning, and illustrating; it's a detailed survey of city states, towns, and landmarks within Rynaga's Veratar, which ties directly into the Rynaga narratives and games.
