Costumes were everywhere to be seen at Phoenix Comicon 2014.
If you wore any sort of costume out to Phoenix Comicon 2014 this past weekend, then we salute you. It took a lot of gumption to wear anything other than shorts and a T-shirt when temperatures were as hot as 110 degrees, particularly if it was made of spandex, pleather, or other non-breathable materials used in making much of colorful attire worn by many of the tens of thousands who attended the massive geek-a-thon in downtown Phoenix.

We've got even more kudos for those costumes that were especially impressive, imaginative, and inspired, including our 10 favorites that we spied over all four days of the annual event at the Phoenix Convention Center, the Hyatt Regency, or elsewhere.

Honorable mentions: Although they didn't make the cut, we also dug the Ooggie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, a family dressed as the Wonder Twins and Gleek, and a pair of princes from Katamari Damacy.

Joel Cranson as Joel Robinson

Mystery Science Theatre 3000

It's been forever and a day since we've seen MST3K, but we were huge devotees of the snarky-as-hell cult television show back during its lengthy run on both Comedy Central and what was then known the Sci-Fi Channel (episodes like "Manos: The Hands of Fate," "Soultaker," and "Mitchell" were particular favorites). And, apparently, local cosplayer Joel Cranson was a big fan as well, since he came to Comicon dressed as Joel Robinson, the show's original protagonist. If you've never seen the show, the character is a down-on-his-luck temp who is stranded on an orbiting space station by his evil bosses at the Gizmonics Institute and forced to watch (and razz) bad movies along with a couple of homemade robots.

Although Cranson, who's renowned locally for the series of Star Wars fan films he's helped create, only brought along one of MST3K's robots, in this case the gumball machine-like Tom Servo, it was a fun bit of nostalgia to see his costume.

He's a killer queen/Gunpowder, gelatine/Dynamite with a laser beam...

Freddie Mercury Cyberman

Of the many cultural exports that the United Kingdom has gifted the colonies over the centuries, two of our favorites are both the music of Queen and the wonder of Doctor Who. So when we spotted this Phoenix Comicon attendee sporting a hybridization of Queen's late frontman Freddie Mercury in his famed yellow jacket from the band's 1986 world tour with the malevolent Whovian cyborg foe known as Cybermen, it definitely caught our eye. It even included Mercury's signature mustache.

We weren't the only ones who dug the costume, as photos of it that were posted online over the past weekend got plenty of love, including such amusing comments as "We Will/We Will/Delete You," playing off the Queen hit "We Will Rock You" and the Cyberman's trademark battle cry.

This is my friend John, we cosplayed together the entire weekend. His cosplay is better than some of these listed.

Geez guys, calm your tits. I think people might be taking this list a LITTLE too literally. I don't think they're claiming these costumes were the best constructed of the entire con--you want to see costumes with true craftmanship then you go to the Masquerade, where many amazing cosplayers likely competed. I think this is more a list of costumes that brought the writer more excitement than the others. You can have two cosplayers right next to each other, one constructed with breathtaking skill of a character you kind of know, and the other not so well-made but it's a character you especially love, or it's a particularly clever concept. Which one is going to put a bigger smile on your face? Also, you have to keep in mind how big PCC was this year. I was there all weekend and saw many great costumes but I see pictures of other amazing ones that I didn't manage to catch a glimpse of at all. It doesn't mean the writer was only there for 10 minutes. In any case, this is all the writer's opinion anyway. Everyone has their own favorite characters and everyone has their own opinions. Please, feel free to make your own Top 10 lists. No need to get out your pitchforks and start shouting curses.

You must have attended on an "off" day because you missed some fabulous costumes. These are all "meh"...except for Freddie Mercury Cyberman. :)

it's as if this list was prepared by someone who was only there for one day. There was an AWESOME Mystique. A Skeletor and Evil Lynn that were freaking cool, a kickass steampunk Green Lantern... And the group of guys from 300 on Saturday... A bunch of great costumes that rank in the top 10. ...but big ups to Robert Tucker for making the list *gratz*

Bill Doran and Steve Smith are also professional cosplayers. One of those costumes is mine!

Bill Doran and Steven Smith at booth 497 had better costumes than over half of the people in this article. Did the person who wrote this actually go inside the convention or just hang out at the entrance? Not to mention that the Mandalorians there had better outfits.

Easy to spot the narrow minded in the comments.

Saw 2 kids under 9 in state if the art wheel chairs.. The kind that is controlled with a straw and the kids breath. Gnarly. However, the pops built a milinium falcon one on and a tie fighter in the other. They were chasing each other. If I could've gotten close enuf I would have snapped a pic. It was epic

Not judging at all I love all of the costumes they should just change the name to Geekfest or Costumefest is all I am saying

Joey, I kind of see your point and side of it but... Comicon started out with the comics/superheroes and villains/comic artists a while ago but as the popularity of it grew over the years, it became known for any "Themed" comic, cartoon, kid show, cult movie, horror film, Sci-Fi, cos-play pop culture convention while also allowing those that wanted a chance to express their nerdy/geeky side for a weekend of pure fun without being judged. I enjoy the mess out of it and I hope to join in the cos-play side of it one of these times also. ;-)

I know cosplay is a big part of Comicon but maybe it is just me, shouldn't the costumes reflect characters from Comicbooks-hence the name of the fest, otherwise change the name to Off Halloween Costume Ball

Whoever did this article and decided on the winners was obviously in the building less than 10 minutes. There were some amazing costumes this year that should have been recognized!

I actually think that this was a better cosplay of Maleficent. Not only did she make her own costume but also everybody else's in this picture. And historically correct in the italian renaissance style to boot! Just my opinion..

Wow! Really? I was there for the entire Con and I saw cosplays that put these to shame. Who decided these were the best?
