Phoenix Artist Courtney Price: 100 Creatives
Daniel Funkhouser Meet embroidery artist Courtney Price.
Phoenix is brimming with creativity. And every other year, we put the spotlight on 100 of the city's creative forces. Leading up to the release of this year's Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome to the 2014 edition of 100 Creatives. Up today: 87. Courtney Price.
You could say embroidery fell into Phoenix artist Courtney Price's lap.
The creative had been a cartoonist for 12 years until she took a fibers class at ASU, where she earned a bachelor's in fine art with an emphasis on drawing. "I fell in love with embroidery, and felt is so vibrant and versatile that I began working with it exclusively," Price, 30, says. "We only studied embroidery for a week while I was in school, so everything I know about sewing I learned from Google searches and YouTube!"
Price brings a cheeky, pop-culture-conscious edge to the art form under the banner Iggy Starpup, stitching such subjects as Breaking Bad's Walter White (in top Heisenberg form), Hayao Miyazaki's animated character Totoro, and hometown hero Grumpy Cat. "I just sew things that I love and am passionate about," she says. "If I'm not interested in the subject it'll show in the finished product. I do a lot of fan art because I have an affinity for anime, manga, and video games."
Courtney Price Price's Totoro hoop is among her pop culture-inspired pieces.
I came to Phoenix with the help of several medical professionals. (I was born here.)
I make art because it's all I know!
I'm most productive when I'm under a deadline. I tend to procrastinate when left to my own devices.
My inspiration wall is full of pictures of critters. Animals never cease to inspire me.
I've learned most from trial and error (mostly error).
Good work should always take some time. If something isn't worth doing well, it's not worth doing at all.
The Phoenix creative scene could use more FIBER ART and cats. Definitely more cats!
