On Thursday, May 29, Changing Hands released a statement on the impending opening of its second location:

"There may be some kinks with our systems to work out, but we're ready to open and welcome you to a fresh, new independent bookstore in the heart of central Phoenix. . . We're planning a proper grand opening celebration for later this summer, and we'll be bringing lots of author events downtown as well. For now, though, we're open for business. All we need is you."

The new space has an industrial feel with exposed duct work, concrete floors, slate gray walls, dark shelving, and a few remnants from the building's days as Beef Eaters, including a pair of chandeliers and two large fireplaces. Changing Hands co-owner Cindy Dach describes the a color scheme as reminiscent of the Oregon coastline.

Unlike the Tempe location, Changing Hands in Phoenix boasts a coffee, beer, and wine bar called First Draft and a large community meeting room that will host literary events and sometimes serve as a hangout space.

At the new store, which Dach describes as the urban version of the Tempe shop, shoppers will find different gift lines and fewer used, on-sale, and children's books. Used book trading will not be available until August.

After its opening night, Changing Hands' Phoenix hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Dach says hours may change come fall, but they'll depend on the community response to the store's summer hours.

The Newton, which is also home to Justin Beckett's Southern Rail, will have a grand opening later this year.

Will there be a children's book area at the new location? I think I just read fewer children books.

Yeah, Central & Camelback...? Well, it's a little bit West of there, like at 2nd Ave, no wait, it's actually at 3rd Ave!!! See NT, it isn't really that hard to get the cross streets right! Of course, I'm not a hip NT writer or headline spinmaster... just a reader who doesn't like BS.

Srsly? Wouldn't it have been just as easy to put Camelback and 3rd Ave in the headline? Still, it's a noteworthy event ;-)

Yes there is. I saw it last night from afar lol--only  because it was so crowded. I think they meant that the books are all new. It is close to the fireplace too so you can sit there and read to your lil one. Very nice.
