Phoenix, your weekend plans are here.

PoeFest @ Hotel San Carlos
Arizona Curriculum Theater is getting old school with its scare tactics as it brings back the fifth annual PoeFest. By now a Halloween tradition, this month-long series celebrating the gothic literature of Edgar Allen Poe takes signature stories and poems -- including Annabel Lee, The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Tell-Tale Heart -- to the stage. Much more than just readings, these literary classics get a creepy makeover as performed by characters in a 19th century asylum for the criminally insane.

PoeFest will run at 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday from October 4 through the 26 at Hotel San Carlos, 202 North Central Avenue. A special Raven Finale will be presented October 31 at Rosson House, 115 North Sixth Street. This final Poe rendition will run in 20 minute intervals from 7:30 to 9: 30 p.m. Hotel San Carlos tickets are $20; Rosson House tickets are $10. First Friday Zombie Walk @ Revolver Records
Zombies get a bad wrap. Sure they're undead, but they do have some redeeming qualities. After all, they only want you for your brains, unlike tvampires, who are all about looks. Sure, there isn't exactly a storied history of zombie heroes, but that's the fun of it. Bruce Campbell and his fistful of boomstick can't slow down the annual Zombie Walk, which takes over downtown Phoenix in search of brains, blood, and guts. In spite of the mayhem, this is a family-friendly event that features live rockabilly music, a costume contest, face painting, and more.

Join the walking dead on Friday, October 4. The walk begins at 5 p.m. outside of Revolver Records, 918 North Second Street. This all-ages event is free, though attendees are encouraged to bring canned food donations for St. Mary's Food Bank. Call 602-348-7179 or visit -- Melissa Fossum
