Get your smarty pants on; it's time for some lectures. Take note: Here are three educational events you've gotta check out in the Phoenix area this month.

Stephen Fried @ Heard Museum
Author and journalist Stephen Fried explores the life and career of Fred Harvey, the entrepreneur who established a restaurant and lodging chain along the railroads of the West, in his book Appetite for America: Fred Harvey and the Business of Civilizing the Wild West -- One Meal at a Time. Fried will discuss Harvey, who also worked to promote tourism throughout the Southwest with his hospitable hangouts, when he stops at Heard Museum on Thursday, August 8.

The discussion will take place in the Steele Auditorium and be followed by a book-signing. Fried speaks from noon to 2 p.m. Admission to the talk is free; access to the museum, where Harvey's collection of katsina dolls is on view, costs $18 for adults.

"Anatomy of the Game Industry" @ Levine Machine Building
Games are more than for playing for Ben Ruiz. For the artist and designer, they're his livelihood. Ruiz will talk about his experiences in the industry and pass along a few tips for those interested in pursuing a career in gaming when he stops by Game CoLab. Topics he'll touch on will include jobs, softwares, and how to break into the business.

Admission to the talk is $15, and participants can register via www.meetup.com. Ruiz will speak starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 17.
