Both of the selections for the evening are documentaries that challenge modes of traditional filmmaking. But they are also loosely tied by subject matter.

The first film, Great Genius and Profound Stupidity, explores the implications of genius by looking at historical figures such as Heller Keller and Paul Erdös. The second film sometimes this happens is an autobiographical piece that utilizes webcam photos and streaming video to investigate notions of personal identity.

"On one hand, you have a Sundance Channel short film presentation on how much is now being discovered about brilliant people once labelled 'stupid,'" Weiss says. "On the other hand is a one-hour film described by the maker as 'how my brain works', done in the most experimental and non-narrative way possible."

Both directors, Raphan and Voog, have shown at well-regarded art venues across the country; however, this weekend marks the first public screening of Voog's sometimes this happens."

Weiss's pairing of the two films is smart yet understated. The evening promises to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience, even if art films aren't usually your thing.

The Beautiful Brain: Two Films by Benita Raphan and Ana Voog is screening at Bragg's Pie Factory on Saturday, June 29. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and admission in $6 (cash only). The films contain nudity and adult content. For more information, visit the No Festival Required website or the Facebook event page.
