Take seat, cinephiles. Moviegoing on Mill Avenue is about to get a whole lot better.

That's because AMC announced plans to open a movie theater in fall of 2013 on Tempe's main drag at Centerpoint on Mill, a complex that features housing, retail, and nightlife elements.

The 11-theater complex will open at 730 S. Mill Ave., the former location of MADCAP Theaters and, before that, a Harkins.

The 37,645 square-foot location will undergo renovation leading up to the re-opening. According to a representative from DMB Inc., Centerpoint's development company, renovation plans include adding stadium-style seating with the reclining seats and footrests, adding state-of-the-art sound systems, and digital projectors. Concession areas are also getting a makeover, while the theater's menu items will be expanded to include 120-plus drink options, including beer and wine offerings.

I think it will be nice to have a theater downtown once again. I wish it well.

Not saying that's the only other option -- just was curious what you think should be done with the space.

Is that the only other option? Mill Avenue's revenue drops drastically in the summer months and can a destroy even a business that's extremely successful the rest of the year. That space is gigantic-- the lease/mortgage and utilities must be outrageous. When it was Harkins, it was a ghost town in the summer. Renovating it for multi-business office space could keep it full and increase revenue to the rest of Mill Ave's businesses.

Playing devil's advocate: Would you rather they tore down the building?

well... two movie theatres went out of business in that location. Lets try a third? Its like having the power to see the future and ignoring it.

Hooray! More big chains returning to Mill Ave. I'm sure it will work at least as well as it did last time.

@Kyle Hague There are literally dozens of multi-business spaces within less than a stone's throw of that spot. It'll be nice to have a business open on Mill that isn't a bar and that will open up the Chase lots for validation finally.

@Kyle Hague How much open office space is there now on Mill Ave? It's pretty empty and the new buildings keep coming with hopes of filling them. Fill the ones we have first.

@Jackalope Ranch If they tore it down, it would likely be replaced by a gym, thats what almost happened last time

@jmoriarty hopefully AMC will be more open to theater rentals than Harkins Valley art has been. I'm excited to possibly run some events there as rentals and I know AMC has been amenable to Rocky Horror shows in the North Valley so Im looking forward to having event conversations with AMC
