Valley of the Sunflowers Paper Project @ Combine Studios
Art meets sustainability at the Valley of the Sunflowers Paper Project. Papermakers transformed sunflower stalks from the community garden spot into surfaces for 21 local artists to create upon. Check out the pieces from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Combine.

Desperado Film Festival @ Paradise Valley Community College
In its fourth year, LGBTQ film festival, Desperado, kicks off with two screenings: Call Me Kuchu, a documentary about Uganda's first openly gay man, and In The Family, a documentary about a young boy raised by two dads. The festival opens at 5 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Valley Community College's Center for the Performing Arts. Individual screening passes are $8 to $10, while all-access passes range from $60 to $80.
