One of Downtown's well-loved vintage shops is asking the community for a little extra support this holiday shopping season. Earlier this month, Antique Sugar was robbed for the sixth time since it opened two years ago.

To help cover damages, the shop located at Zinnias at Melrose Mall, will be host to "It's a Wonderful Clothing Store Benefit!" this Thursday with live music, a cookie bake-off, drinks and, of course, a lot of shopping.

Hollywood Regency, Now Called Antique Sugar, Saved From Closure

Antique Sugar, 724 West Indian School Road, was formerly Hollywood Regency, a vintage clothing store run by the late local vintage fashion maven Heidi Owens. Bingham and her longtime friend and business partner Annamarie Sanchez, took over the business in October 2010, saving it from closure.

Bingham and Sanchez both say they were heartbroken when the police called to say their store had been broken into this month. The thieves smashed a side window to enter the store and stole about 20 vintage leather jackets.

Bingham and Sanchez, of the Mesa-based rock trio Juicy Newt, had set aside money to spend on traveling home for Christmas and buying presents for their families and friends -- not to replace their store window for the umpteenth time.

"We don't make a lot of money here," Bingham says. "We do this because we love it."

Frustrated, Bingham posted about what had happened on Facebook and friends instantly started brainstorming ways to help this local shop recover some of its losses.

"We were just venting and everyone rallied around it," she says.

In addition to supporting a local business and providing the opportunity to shop until 2 a.m. on a day that isn't Black Friday, the benefit promises to be a good time for all guests -- vintage patrons, first-time visitors, and music lovers alike.

Bingham says attendees can shop all night and enjoy a 20-percent discount on all merchandise storewide. All money raised from the benefit will be used to repair and install bars on the window and what's left over will be donated to a local charity.

Sanchez and Bingham will host an outdoor concert on the shop's "loading dock stage" featuring local bands including PALMS, Sun Ghost, and Doctor Bones. After 10 p.m., the party moves inside for an open-mic-style acoustic show that lasts until early morning.

Bingham said she's excited for the benefit and foresees an impromptu dress up party at some point during the night.

"When we do have parties in this store it always does get somewhat out-of-control -- you know drunken dress up," Bingham said and laughed. "It will be a lot of fun."

Antique Sugar's benefit is free and open to the public from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Visit the store's Facebook page for more information.
