Categories: 100 Creatives

When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives.

Ann Morton is a local artist who teaches in the fiber department at ASU and Color foundations at Paradise Valley Community College.

She spent almost 30 years in the graphic design industry, which she says is evident in her work, both visually and in her process. She was owner, partner, and principal at Thinking Caps, a longtime Phoenix environmental graphic design firm until 2006, when she left to pursue her MFA at ASU.

Morton is a native Phoenician, a mother (she's married to Phoenix-based architectural photographer, Bill Timmerman), and a grandmother.

"Nagging" Public Art Performance - Personal couch, City of Phoenix parking space, caution tape, crochet needle
I came to Phoenix ... through my Mom and Dad -- I'm a native Phoenician.

I make art because ... it allows me a voice where I might not otherwise be able to adequately express myself in matters that I find important to communicate. And I LOVE to make things. My intention is to satisfy my love of making while applying a social purpose to my work.

"Caution Field Project" (shown with the False Safety Net) Public Art Intervention - Crocheted Caution Tape (approx. 46,143 ft.), 10 homeless participants who were paid $4.00 per square ft. to make 225 squares for an overall 16 ft. x 16 ft. field. One homeless participant assembled every square to create the overall piece.
I'm most productive ... when I have a deadline, I've developed the "idea" and am making the work.

My inspiration wall is full of ... I don't have an inspiration wall - it all percolates in my head. I take inspiration in everyday events that affect my life and the lives of other citizens.

I've learned the most from ... keeping quiet, being observant and stealth.

Good work should always ... give you a good thump in the heart region of your body.

The Phoenix creative scene could use more ... . (period)
