Angel Diaz's Quetzalcoatl Twins on 16th Street

Categories: Mural City

It's about time Phoenix sees some serious mural love. In the interest of giving credit to their artists and because we're losing track of the times we've said, "Woah, when did that go up?", we bring you Mural City, a series on the murals springing up around town -- their artists, their hosts and their inspirations.

Angel Diaz has been a mural machine on 16th Street, helping out friends Nomas, Lalo Cota, Thomas Marcus, Gennaro Garcia, Hugo Medina, and the rest of the Calle 16 crew as they brighten up the barrio.

This weekend, Diaz added some serious color to his own studio, between Barrio Cafe and Por Vida Gallery on 16th Street just south of Thomas Road.

You might not be able to peek into his studio/soon-to-be storefront quite yet from the street-side of the building, but if you swing around back, you'll see Diaz has made himself right at home with a mural he calls Quetzalcoatl Twins.

More photos after the jump ...

Quetzalcoatl is a Mesoamerican deity, whose name is of the Nahuatl language (meaning "feathered serpent"), and was the patron god learning and knowledge.

Diaz, whose work you can see on the community mural on Roosevelt Row next to monOrchid Gallery, at Barrio Queen in Scottsdale, on the now-defunct Fillmore Creative space on Grand Avenue, at Sky Harbor Airport at the new Barrio Cafe on the low-wall mural just south of Por Vida Gallery, and throughout the alleyway behind Phoenix's original Barrio Cafe (and the birthplace of the Calle 16 project), is a big part of the local street art community has big plans for Phoenix.

Stay tuned for more info about his studio and enjoy the eye candy below in the meantime.
