Categories: 100 Creatives

When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives

Hugo Medina
Hugo Medina was born in La Paz, Bolivia and immigrated with his family to New York as a child.

He says his interest in art was fostered by his father who was an architect. After receiving his BFA from C.W Post/ Long Island University in 1998, he studied education at the University of Phoenix. He taught art in a number of schools in Phoenix while creating metalwork and sculpture in his free time. He says through teaching he found his passion in educating young people about artwork and encouraging them to create at all ages.

Medina is a co-founder of the Calle 16 Mural Project, which aims to build communities through the arts in Phoenix.

Hugo Medina
I came to Phoenix with . . . a 100 bucks, my Bike, chasing after my heart.

I make art because . . . I must, it's all i have ever done. entered my 1st art contest when I was 5.

I'm most productive when . . . I have deadlines, usually paint late at night, the plus side of insomnia.

Hugo Medina
My inspiration wall is full of . . . pictures of my two girls. they "are my favorite work of art."

I've learned the most from . . . my mistakes and failures.

Good work should always . . . come from the heart, one puts into their work what one can't have in there own existence. it was because God was unhappy that she created the world

The Phoenix creative scene could use . . . more unity, and community.

The Creatives, so far ... (And while you're here, check out 100 Tastemakers on Chow Bella.)
