93: Jeff Chabot

Categories: Creatives 2012

When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more.

We're talking painters, writers, sculptors, designers, architects -- Phoenicians who are digging into the local scene and adding their own creative elements. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives. And while you're here, check out 100 Tastemakers on Chow Bella.

If you're looking for Jeff Chabot, you'll likely find him in one of the oldest venues in downtown Phoenix. He moved from Los Angeles to Phoenix to take the job as curator/director of Modified Arts when Kim Larkin stepped down from the position last June, and has been busy meeting new artists, installing, and de-installing work ever since.

The artist/curator says he's originally from the East Coast, and studied photography and video at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In L.A., he was a board member for the art nonprofit FAR (Foundation for Art Resources), and co-founder of the experimental art space D-Block Projects, which brought S.O.S., an immigration and border issue-themed exhbition to monOrchid gallery last year.

Tonight, Chabot opens a new exhibition, "The End of Wild", tonight at Modified Arts.

I came to Phoenix with . . . my family and dog (the cat didn't want to move).
I make art because . . . I'm not sure what else I would do.

I'm most productive when . . . I have a tight deadline.

My inspiration wall is full of . . . newspaper clippings, artwork I admire, and amazing photographs from photojournalists.

I've learned the most from . . . "doing" rather than "conceptualizing."
Good work should always . . . be unique & challenging.

The Phoenix creative scene could use more . . . financial support for artists.
