Bestselling author Sarah Vowell will be giving a reading and book signing at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 28, at 8 p.m..

You may know her wise cracking, dry-humored voice from the radio show, This American Life, or from appearances on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

Vowell's most recent book, Unfamiliar Fishes, takes on the American annexation of Hawaii. But in true Vowell style, she peppers the book with a colorful cast of characters that includes: dour missionaries, bawdy whalers, an overthrown Hawaiian Queen, greedy sugar barons, and Teddy Roosevelt.

As Vowell writes, "It would be just as pretty to see the history of Hawaii as a hopeful multi-ethnic saga symbolized by mixed plates in which soy-sauce and mayonnaise peacefully coexist and congeal. But anyone who has ever taken a tour of Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu knows that the marriage of mahi-mahi and macaroni salad kicked off with a shotgun wedding."

If Vowell can take the history of the 50th state and give it such idiosyncratic depth we can only imagine what she might do with the 48th. We would love to see some of Arizona's history run through the quirky, archives-laden brain of Sarah Vowell.

The author of six books of nonfiction on American history and culture ranging from the first three presidential assassinations to New England puritans will give a reading and answer questions from the audience, followed by a book signing. Tickets are available for $29 and $39 at ScottsdalePerformingArts.org  or by calling the box office at (480) 499-TKTS (8587).
