Phoenix Idiotarod Takes Place in February, But Smack-Talking Starts Now

The average shopping cart found at your neighborhood grocery store is a fairly sturdy beast. It can not only withstand the ordinary bumps and scrapes of the supermarket aisle, but also the collisions and calamities of the yearly Phoenix Idiotarod.

And believe us, there's plenty of crash-bang action taking place during the annual race that's put on by the Arizona Cacophony Society. The urban pranking group recently announced the date of this year's race, which will take place on Saturday, February 4.

As in years past, the 2012 version of the Idiotarod will feature teams of five (a la the yearly Iditarod Great Sled Race in Alaska that inspired the event) pulling and pushing shopping carts during a raucous race throughout downtown Phoenix as they attempt to cross the finish line first. Its also a bar crawl of sorts, as participants will stop at checkpoints set up at nearby bars.

The Idiotarod also gets pretty intense when it comes to the carts themselves, as well as the costumes worn by participants. Each team basically has carte blanche to design their ride around any theme they choose while oftentimes wearing costumes that fit with their theme. In year's past, the participating carts have run the gamut from the benign to the bizarre, ranging from mobile disco on wheels to a mobile abortion clinic on wheels (no joke).

While there probably won't be anything quite that patently offensive during this year's, there's sure to be a variety of outrageous, unusual, and memorable carts. Check out the list of 36 different teams that have signed up to participate and you'll see groups that are inspired by sex ("Mile High Club," "You Show Me Yours & I'll Show You Mime"); booze and alcoholic mishaps ("Whiskey Richard," "Drunken Divas," "Bet My BAC Is Higher Than Yours"); and pop culture ("The Not So Carebears," "Baywatch!").

And if you're a fan of the 2004 Will Ferrell comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, then get ready to see the flick's epic news anchor battle staged with shopping carts. One Idiotarod team is calling themselves the "Channel 4 News Team" while another will take on the role of "Wes Mantooth and the Rival News Team," which was played by Vince Vaughn in the movie. Hope someone remembers to bring a trident.

Teams have even begun talking trash online in very creative fashion. Members of "Pokey's Peeps" posted a Behind the Music-style video on YouTube this past weekend featuring the Art Clokey animated character (and sidekick of Gumby) dissing on his onetime partner.

In response, the members of "Gumby's Girls" (led by the legendary green-colored character) uploaded a similar video of their own. Funny stuff.

The Phoenix Idiotarod will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, starting at Bikini Lounge, 1502 Grand Avenue. Click here for more info.
