Modern Manor: Treasure Hunting in Retro Heaven

You don't have to drive four hours for a taste of Palm Springs' Midcentury glamour. Instead, head to Modern Manor, a Melrose District warehouse specializing in designer furniture and decor.

The Manor's pieces are in perfect condition from designers including Charles and Ray Eames (Bonus: check out a documentary on the Eames duo tomorrow night at Harkins Valley Art), Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen and -- deep breath, design lovers -- Dorothy Draper.  The space, a mod Nirvana, is unleashed in a hip, airy atmosphere where shoppers can wind around tastefully styled dinner tables, couches, dressers, and side tables.

The one downer to this luxurious retro heaven? The punchy price tags. Armchairs start around $300, and don't stop 'til they're close to four digits. But if you're looking for just a touch of designer style, you can still shop Modern Manor on a budget.

We found six "Mad Men"-style prop pieces, all under $100. Check out our favorite affordable finds -- plus a serious dream piece -- after the jump...

Under $20
1. Vintage letterpress tiles - $4 each
These make for great display pieces on bookshelves or side tables -- or, you know, insanely creative wall displays

2. Set of six teak plates - $16
Teak is a major theme in Midcentury modern decor, and these plates would perfectly complement white ceramic dinnerware on a modern tabletop.

Under $50
3. Vintage (working) clock - $25
This clock is an easy, useful way to bring retro decor into your living room, kitchen or bedroom.

4. LaGardo Tackett egg shaped cookie jar - $45
The designer of this awesome jar, California modernist LaGardo Tackett, was best known for his cheeky egg designs.

Under $80
5. Mid-century table - $68
A coffee table under $100 is truly a steal at the pricey Modern Manor -- all this one needs is a simple paint job.

6. Antique Spool Cabinet - $75
This cabinet doesn't have to hold spools. Its compartments are ideal for any kind of crafting material, or as storage for small kitchen wares. The roughed-up wood also gives the cabinet a unique industrial look.
