Jasmine Jarrett's Vintage Ventures
"When I was going through school, I was very much into sports and being low-maintenance," she says. "But I always had an opinion about fashion and what I liked and what I didn't."
Today, Jarrett owns Butter Toast Boutique, which grew out of collaboration with Traci Nelson, who used to model for her. They settled into a spot in the Roosevelt Row Arts District as their operation gained attention and a customer base.
"We focus on buying clothes that are wearable," says Jarrett. "We want people to buy the clothing and wear it. Not just have it sit in their closet."
Along with co-owner Nelson, Jarrett also runs Toast, a fun store-based blog in which they share photos of their latest finds and funny viral videos.
A pair of vintage Levis and a vintage bodysuit. I'm wearing modern wedges by MIA and a vintage necklace. What is your favorite thing to wear?
My favorite thing to wear right now is anything high-waisted. I think it's flattering for my body type, and it's in.What's the most attention-grabbing thing you've worn?
I've worn a fully-laced bodysuit, with a skirt or a pair of jeans. The whole top is almost nude. That's the raciest thing.
What's the last item of clothing you bought?
I bought three silk blouses from a thrift store last week.
Where do you usually shop?
What's your favorite item found while thrifting?
When I was younger, I found my favorite cardigans that I would wear all the time: the grandpa and grandma cardigans. Those, for some reason, I can't let go of.
What item of clothing do you most covet at the moment?
I want to find a really great pair of lace-up boots for this winter. Something with a wedge or a heel. They're really comfortable for the most part, more than heels, and they can go with anything right now.
Where would you love to have a shopping spree?
I really like a bargain, so it would have to be H&M or Topshop, something like that. I have a low price point so it's more for my money.
What are some of your style icons?
I have many. Chloe Sevigny is one of my favorites. She's been thrifting and wearing vintage since the '90s.
Give us a childhood memory of you and clothing:
When my parents asked me what I would do with a million dollars, I said I would shop till I dropped. I was six years old.
