Between the debt ceiling crisis, a yo-yoing stock market and early campaigning for the next presidential election, it's tempting to tune out of the 24-hour news cycle that chronicles -- in painstaking detail -- every cloud on the horizon in this volatile political climate. Opening at Trunk Space this weekend, Tommy Cannon's "Character: the 44 presidents" works to lighten the civic mood.

Phoenix-based animator, comedian and puppeteer Cannon has drawn a portrait of each Commander in Chief, seeking out and emphasizing the visual quirks on each ruler's face. Both giggle-inducing and thought-provoking, the works give a cartoonish look to George Washington, Barack Obama and the 42 elected presidents in between.

In addition to the less than flattering presidential portrayals, Cannon is set to perform what he calls his Mount Rushmore puppet show -- in which Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington quibble amongst themselves. The puppets come to life Friday, August 19, at 7 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m.

"We've been awaiting this show for about a year, since Tommy first told us about the project," says Trunk Space co-owner JRC. "It's going to be an amazing exhibit."

See all the pride, pomp, and circumstance at the show's free opening on Friday, August 19, at 6 p.m. The exhibition runs through Friday, September 2.
