Downtown artist, gallery owner, and contemporary arts advocate Greg Esser is back with another project -- this time, in Tempe.

ASU Art Museum announced that Esser will be associate director of the Desert Initiative, which will support artistic and scientific research into desert cultures and environments.

Esser's a natural fit for the project, according to museum representatives, because he knows the desert, is passionate about its land issues and policy, and has lived throughout the Southwest and Sahara. And through his experiences with his own artwork, curating exhibitions, and working with public arts programs, he also knows art.

The initiative will form a network of arts institutions in the Southwest and international desert regions. Esser says he hopes these partnerships will create opportunities for artists, scientists and environmentalists to work together with a specific environment and culture-based focus.

Esser's finishing up his last small assignments as Director of the Civic Art Program for the County Arts Commission in Los Angeles, where he's been commuting to and from Phoenix for each city's arts events and gallery openings.

He says in addition to the new gig at the museum, he says he's looking forward to keeping up with his Regular Gallery on Roosevelt Street, staying involved with Roosevelt Row, and connecting contemporary artists and the local community through phICA.

And while his Desert Initiatives commute may now include a few more national and international stops, we'll be happy to run into him on a day between First and Third Friday.

ASU Art Museum is on the southeast corner of Mill Avenue and 10th Street in Tempe. For more info, check out the museum's website and blog.
