The Half Off Happy Hour at The Napoleon

Categories: Nightlife
Looking for something to do this week? "Night Owl" is a quick guide to special nights at bars and clubs around town. We'll give you a few hints re: cover, dress code, music and atmosphere. Tuesday - Friday marks The Half Off Happy Hour at The Napoleon Cigar Club.

The Napoleon
feels a bit like a time machine. The bar's lined with ash trays (used by guests and employees) and the waitstaff looks like a group snatched out of a speakeasy. The Scottsdale bar/lounge projects films from the 40 and 50s onto an adjacent building, for added atmosphere, every night.

Half Off Happy Hour goes down every Tuesday through Friday and features a full bar's worth of half-price drinks for all in attendance.

The Music: DJ Mr. P Body and a variety of other local DJs provide laid-back grooves for The Napoleon's happy hour. On this particular evening there were no DJs, but the beats could all be characterized as swanky smooth jazz. The Napoleon also features live jazz after 9 p.m. every Thursday though Saturday. The owners say they are looking to add more live jazz performances during the happy hour in the future.

The Bar: The Napoleon is definitely geared toward smokers and celebrates cigar culture. If you don't plan to smoke, check out the three different patio areas that are a nice relief from the slightly cloudy interior of the bar.

The People: A slightly older crowd with a variety of people in their late 20s -- most with a cigar or cigarette at arm's reach.

The Style: The bar itself is very posh and sophisticated. The style of those in attendance followed suit. Be sure to class it up a bit if you want to blend in.

What we loved: The cinematic aspects of the evening were charming. Every night the Napoleon projects a classic film onto an adjacent building, which can be seen from the street and from two of the patios. There is no audio but it adds a hip SoHo vibe to the evening. The televisions behind the bar run a nonstop barrage of older James Bond flicks as well.

What we didn't love: The bar is pretty tucked away and tough to find as it is on the third floor. If it weren't for the building-sized movie being projected from the patio, we would have definitely missed out on this secret spot.

Are we going back? Yep, as soon as we upgrade our corncob pipe.
