The New LSD: A Synthetic Substance Called 2C-E (aka "Europa") Makes a Dangerous Comeback

The chemical diagram for 2C-E
First, there was spice (a.k.a. "synthetic marijuana"). Then came "bath salts" that reportedly had the same effects as crystal meth when snorted.

Now, another designer drug has hit the market -- and reportedly resulted in a fatality last week.

It's a synthetic hallucinogen called 2C-E, also known as "Europa," and it reportedly has the same effects as LSD and psychedelic mushrooms. It's available for sale on the Internet, and seems popular among the under-21 raver crowd.

There's been one reported case of an overdose of 2C-E in Phoenix, but other states have seen a larger number of incidents.

On Wednesday, March 16, a 19 year-old man named Trevor Robinson died in a Minneapolis suburb after ingesting 2C-E. Ten other people who'd been at the same party, ages 16 through 21, were taken to hospitals after doing the drug.

The death has put 2C-E in the current spotlight, but the substance was actually developed more than 30 years ago -- with permission from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

Chemist Alexander Shulgin, creator of 2C-E
The drug was developed by California psychopharmacologist Alexander Shulgin in the 1970s. At the time, Shulgin had a license from the DEA to produce synthetic drugs in his laboratory in order to analyze drugs and provide testimony for prosecutions.

What Shulgin did instead was become an enthusiast; after publishing a book about synthetics called PhiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story, he lost his DEA license.

In his book, Shulgin describes the effects of 16 mg of 2C-E: "There was a strange devil-angel pairing. As I was being told of the ecstatic white-light ascent of my partner into the God-space of an out-of-body experience, I was fighting my way out of a brown ooze."

Other reported effects of 2C-E aren't quite as ecstatic. Police in Minnesota told media that the victims last week were having difficulty breathing, and some appeared to be hallucinating.

The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center reports receiving one call related to 2C-E -- in this case, a 19 year-old male was treated in an emergency room in January of this year after reportedly snorting the drug. He was experiencing an increased heart rate, chest pain, agitation, and hallucinations.

Like the synthetics in spice and bath salts when they first hit the market, the 2C-E (or "Europa") compound is not yet a controlled substance in the U.S. Synthetics with similar chemical structures, such as 2C-I and 2C-T-7, are also currently legal stateside.

However, a related substance called 2C-B (also developed by Shulgin in the '70s), is a Schedule I Controlled Substance in the U.S. The chemical structure of 2C-E differs from 2C-B by only one element (E bonds an ethyl group with hydrogen, whereas B uses Bromine). Any drugs with similar chemical structure to 2C-B could be prosecuted under the Federal Analogue Act (an analogue is a substance similar to another substance, but usually differs by a single element or variation).

Considering how quickly the DEA moved to ban the synthetic compounds in spice, they may move even faster to controll 2C-E -- especially now that it's been pinned to a death in the Midwest.

My son nearly died this last weekend with severe psychosis, rapid heart rate, massive diarrhea & vomiting and seizures.  You idiots that think this a "love story"  you have really fried your brain to extra crispy.  Too bad there are predators out their praying on our youth.

Good stuff 2CE its my favorite if i had created it, it would have been a chemical love story for me too

Niki also has plenty of articles about MMJ and how to roll a joint, but refers to 2C-E as dangerous and the new LSD...pot meet kettle

T-7 is illegal. All these drugs are illegal under the analogue act. Also its pihkal. I have both books right in front of me.

Niki your article is literaly a waste of space, it does nothing but spout the same anti drug crap that's been spat out since the beginning of time.

What is sad is that misuse of these chemicals will only lead to further deaths, as many people are to foolish to take them seriously.

But let's not forget alcohol and cigarettes. The true killers.

Quit your job niki. This should be embarassing for you.

Btw glad to see other reasonable responses to such an ignorant article.

Wow, I'm sorry that those deaths occurred. :/ However, I hate the fuss: alcohol kills THOUSANDS of people a year, both directly and indirectly, and people just say "kids will be kids."

If safe, overdose-proof drugs (like marijuana and LSD) were legal, we wouldn't have this problem.

You may notice the effects described by shulgin is for 16mg. those death/people having difficulty breathing are people going over the 100mg's

Again another media hype push for a ban. I am so sick of idiots thinking they can try whatever they want and then try too much. Use common sense and have a sitter near you at all times when trying something new. Defiantly do not drive while under the drug. Also start off small. If it does not work, you could try some more, or just quit. Just don't over do anything without starting off small waiting 15 mins and seeing what happens. Kids can obtain energy drinks and drink too many of them and have the same symptoms or worse. Now that , in fact is true. But do you see the media pushing a ban on those? NO!One last tip if you are going to try stuff. Read reviews on various places and in forums. People who have tried this stuff will tell you what their experience was.

Poorly written, poorly researched 'article' that lacks journalistic integrity. Shameful. I'm assuming the writer is using this in their portfolio when they go to apply for a job with Fox.

I think that whenever you, as a responsible journalist (snicker), should have the opportunity to cite a death due to one type of recreational drug, you should be compelled by your conscience as such a responsible journalist (snicker), to put those injuries in perspective by quoting the most lethal drug man has ever "synthesized" - ALCOHOL.

Let's see - I'm reading your article for this "responsible" journalist attribute . . . reading . . . reading . . . NOPE, don't see any reference to the deaths and injuries caused by other drugs. Hmmm.

Before I go further Niki . . . did you write this piece as a journalist or as an opinion piece. If you wrote it from a journalistic perspective - YOU FAIL! If you wrote it from an opinion perspective - your opinion is that Europa (and other recently created synthetic drugs you listed) are more dangerous than alcohol and therefore should be thought of differently by the DEA and the public.

I posit that we should all be very careful when ingesting substances that may cause Euphoria or enlightenment through hallucintion. Read about them, learn what the dangers are and how to overcome or lessen the risk of injury to yourself and others. But we should definately not try to promote ignorance by mis-informing the public about the relative risks of various types of recreational drugs by leaving out important information like the following:

The news accounts of Trevor Robinson's death indicate that the partiers had been drinking heavily before the guy with the 2C-E arrived, so it would be far more accurate to attribute his death to a synergistic effect between alcohol and the synthetic. Let's not forget that dozens of teens die of alcohol overdose (alone) each year.

I stick to Arizona desert grown natural peyote myself. its out there in the desert for free if you know where to look. i been cutting peyote in the same place out in a secret part of the desert since 1976. there is still plenty there to. today's youth are not smart enough to find free Arizona peyote like us old hippies are.

Thanks it is always nice to know what is on the new market, it is a shame the new stuff is so bad for you, they need to make some drugs legal before these young kids kill their selves trying un proven crap.

ELECTRIC FOG

old hippies can handle this type of drug but you young pussy yuppies best stay away from it. it could cause you to grow a beard and grow your hair long and quit your straight square yuppie job buy a psychedelic love van and hit the American hippie gypsy road to where ever USA all to the tune of grateful dead and allman brothers music.i dont think todays youth can handle taking life that far. 10 miles out of the city and they might freak out and miss their job and their parents.

@brewtank You ignorant fool. This is a brilliant man who was given a license by your government to produce this. He didn't make this for the reason you think. These chemicals are all around us...it is the pursuers that over indulge(like your son) who put a bad name on every substance known to man. If you're mad at anyone it should be your son. He obviously took more than anyone should.Don't be a sheep

You're ignorant, you haven't expanded your mind at all. Im young and have taking an ounce of shrooms from a hippie and found out life is about living the way you want, you don't have to b a jobless bum and burned out to live a happy life. There is a reason why people improved technology and living habits cause they got sick of living shitty. You couldn't have heard grateful dead or have vw bus with business people. Peace

it also can cause the user to wear bright colored tye dye shirts. this can be very dangerous to squares and straights. they have to stay violent, dull, boring, stale, humorless and miserable to be alive. they are not allowed to be free and happy spirits like the old hippies were.

Making recreational drugs illegal only employs government workers (read: DEA, ATF, Cops, etc.) and black market operators in the underground economy. If you want to expand government and it's control over your life - vote to keep these dunderheads in office that support outlawing recreational drugs. However, if you want to reduce the abuse of recreational drugs, support full employment legislation.
