Desert Car Kings Debuts Tonight; Filming Takes Place in Phoenix This Weekend

Categories: Film and TV

The Arizona-based reality show Desert Car Kings debuts tonight on the Discovery Channel. Soon thereafter, you can be in the spotlight when cameras roll in north Phoenix.

As was previously reported, the McClure family, who own Desert Valley Auto Parts, will be the main characters in Desert Car Kings. The cable television series, which premiers tonight at 11 p.m. local time, follows the family as they scour junkyards, backyards, and random sites for classic autos and rare car parts.

On Saturday, a Discovery Channel camera crew will be filming at the Five Star Auto Auction, 22454 North 21st Avenue, when more than 250 rides, including a 1968 Dodge Charger and a 1950 Cadillac, are sold to dealers during the open-to-the-public event. The gates open at 7 a.m. for the auction that takes place from 8 a.m. to noon. For more info, check out www.5starautoauction.com/classics.

I'll watch the show if it's on, but it always rings with fakeness for me. What's with this

"For crying out loud, we've got the one and only Buick Astrobird V8 ever built, and it could be worth $12 million if we pitch it right. However, we must, must, MUST get it done in 2 weeks! No, we can't take our time with it and put it out in perfect fettle in a couple of years... it's GOT to go at the next auction! So let's stick this old straight-six truck engine in it, do a rush paint job with no primer and one coat of paint in a dusty shed, put bigger wheels on it, etc., etc..."

Lo and behold, they rush it out at the very, very last minute after suddenly finding all the missing parts in their yard (which seem to become magically re-chromed as the car's on its way to the auction). Several punters say they'll bid their eye teeth for it. All the bids come in a rush early on and then coming to an abrupt halt.

The hammer falls at $6,000.

WTF? A concours paint job itself would take up at least three weeks, but at least it would maximise the the potential profit for a few grand's outlay.

So, quite entertaining but definitely fake.

The "no expense spared" 1969 GTO they sold at Russo @ Steele is now for sale up on eBay (item #220762845001). The pics don't look all that bad...but if that's the same car from the TV show, it must be pretty rough in person.

I wouldnt touch that car, the frame was bent and their "fix" was a joke. if someone buys that car, they better change the whole frame.

Discovery screwed up by showing the floorpan was all corroded just as they were about to put down the carpetting. Maybe it was just surface corrosion but real pros would make sure the concealed parts were properly restored too and not just the visible trim and panels.

Last year I sold a 66 SS696 Chevelle body to a guy that is the sales manager at the local Chevy dealer. It took him over a year to restore it. The sad part he installed a 454 engine in it. Right now it’s sitting in the dealer show room. So restore one in 2 weeks? Probably could but it sure won’t be show car quality! And this one is!

Turning out junk from junk. I can't believe the Discovery Channel has stooped so low to film junk like this. And the slick owner with hair from the 50's about as honest as you can throw him. Cancel this waste of time.

This show is lame. Any respectable car guy can pick out the fakeness in about ten minutes. Theres the money guy who doesnt know jack, his kid who always saves the build at the last minute by finding a treasure trove of parts they need in three days or else. Then the bactual builders who are always shocked by a deadline. Cliche'!!!!

I watched the one on the SS396 convertible. The guy said those cars came with a 360 HP engine. The 66 came with a 325 and 350 with oval port heads and a 375 with rectangle port heads. I sold one that was in bad shape and the guy is doing a frame off. Talked to him the other day and he’s been working on it a year and has $35,000 in it so far. I would hate to see some of the cars they are “Restoring” It would probably be a joke!

All this negativity just proves how people in the spot light are put under a microscope for the perfect know it alls of the world to judge. The show is entertaining and frankly a lot better then most of the garbage on TV these days. Its pathetic something refreshing and positive has to bring out the scum trash talkers.

I agree with the first two lines of your statement but on the other hand, you have people posting-stating that they actually have been there to the business saying they don't know the difference between night and day! When you have people claiming this how can you make that last statement "elance" .

elance

For every dissatisfied customer there is usually dozens of satisfied ones. Happens in every business in every industry. Besides for all anyone knows the postings are from their competitors like the one from Herb complete with a location. I find the show entertaining and enjoy it.

i live right around the corner from this place and its a joke around here i go in there all the time and have never bought anything because they think they have gold they ARE RUDE and this show has a shop that they restore cars at, i dont know where this place is but all ive seen is rotting crap in there pretty picked through and they have a little shed in the center when they hold there 30-40 year old junky tools for striping car parts for outragous prices. in the front of the yard they have some cars that they bought in "better" shape and have them for sale for way more than most are worth and they sit there for years ive been seeing the same crap for years there. this show is crap and when i saw it i immediatly thought who would give these retards a show? everybody i talk to in all the car clubs and shows around here every one that bought something from there will tell you straight up that they do have rare stuff (sometimes) but its crazy how much they want for it and i have heard of them screwing customers over and over again how they stay in business is a mystery this show will not last.

What a crock! Taking out a perfectly good number match 292 to drop in a smogger 351 into that Galaxie so it will sell better? You guys know NOTHING! People will snag up that original combo in no time flat, me for one.BTW Why did you tape over the side molding on that car to paint it?Sure proves why you don't make any profit off your restoreds...

Ive been there personally... for one thing, your treated like a jerk and they act like they dont want your business. The only thing they have going for them is rust free sheet metal and they treat it like garbage.... they walk on hoods, trunk lids, toss these parts down from there three high piled cars , bend corners, just plain mutilate anything in their yard. The cars in the "for sale" corral are so over priced it doesnt make any sense. I asked about a 72 AMC Ambassador and was told $4250.00 and they also said I was the only person to ask about it in the two years its been there... then they proceeded to tell me that they also dont have a title or keys! $12,500.00 for a roached out 59 Ford retractable needing everything! You can buy running/driving cars that need restoration for that kind of money. I just watch the clip of the show.... And it proves once again that they think everyone is dense,,,,, Why would that old man pic up a cornering light bezel to a 67 68 69 Thunderbird when they are working on a 64 65 66 body style? Those parts dont even come close to interchanging. What a sad way to run a business and treat your customers

I probably won't be doing or buying any restored cars, but it's fun to watch the shows. The thing that really bugs me about the show is the idea that they can do a decent resto on a car in 2 weeks, especially with the bozos they have working there. Then they have to add in the drama of firing their painter and dealing with yard break-ins that turn out to be raccoons. Other posters have pointed out they totally mis-identify cars (El Camino/Ranchero...OMG). I think I'm going to remove this one from my favorites list.

Joyous642
Joyous642

Wow!!! Thanks for all the warnings. I was actually thinking on having these guys help me with my 1987 Trans Am. But, Now,,, No Way.. I did notice all the Deadline Times and thought how can they do a Good job when you only have (2 weeks) to fully restore a Thunderbird???!!!!I'll just check further and take one step at a time with my car, not much more to do with it, a new paint job and it will just about be finished.

M10ren
M10ren

What a joke this show is. In their montage of cars showing all the 200 options and millions of combinations of Galaxies, over 3/4 of the cars they showed were Chevy Malibus. Idiots!

Donkar67
Donkar67

I started to watch the show because of the old cars, but after watching about 10 minutes I realized these guys don't have a clue about cars and restorations. They pick up a solid Galaxie, then say they are going to restore it by painting it "quick sell red" , putting an interior out of a 64 Galaxie in it and ripping the original engine out . Then they find a 351m, which they show as coming out of an 75 El Camino when its obviously a Ranchero, and they tell the audience the 351m is a great engine because it has 350 horsepower. Those motors were junk from the get go, and were so smogged out and detuned they had nowhere near that kind of horsepower. They painted the car in an open garage, and they wonder why it doesn't look good. I'm glad they didn't get what they wanted for the car , but it was still overpriced at $6,500 . I wont watch this show again !

Texas Don
Texas Don

What a joke! They refer to engines as motors, try to tell us that a 351M is a better engine than a 390, reverse the shackles de-arching the springs on the 62 Galaxy which looks like it was painted with a broom. Install what would be an illegal in most states exhaust system that sounded like an old John Deere on it and try to tell folks that it was worth 10G. Whined when they got 6.5Gs for it when in reality the whole mess was only worth about 1G. Showed pics of 64 and 65 Malibus which they claimed to be 62 Fords. EGADS!!!! Are these assclowns for real???

Jimcedg

i love your comment ! saw the show twice. Jokers trying to start an engine in the shed with loose gas everywhere. You can bet the engine they picked out of the Galaxy, for the f100 makeover, was a trashy as the scrap it was peeled out of. Cant wait to see it on the side of the road , not far from where they jumped it off from. Saw the Barracuda episode. Ugly car , waste of time. All in all , put enough lipstick on anything , and some poor sucker will bite. jim

I have bought stuff from this company before and never will or have I done it again. They spend thousands of money on advertising and I see were they get it from. RIPPING CONSUMERS OFF I hope after people seeing this show they will realize what a shame this company is.
