Heard Museum Shop and Berlin Gallery: Shop the Southwest

​The Heard Museum is one of Phoenix's largest (and oldest) art attractions because of its comprehensive collections, interesting exhibitions, and cultural festivals. In its more than 81 years in the Valley, the museum has expanded to include a North Scottsdale location, a café, a shop and bookstore, and the Berlin Gallery.

We headed to the downtown location to browse the shop and gallery. Check out what we'd take, what we'd leave and why we'd go back (including today's sale!) after the jump...

Things we're taking home:

​1. Tree Ornaments: When it comes to holiday decorations, you can never have too many ornaments. The museum shop has trees filled with handmade ornaments. For $10-$50, they make the perfect little gift for friends and family.
2. Beaded Hair Clips:  These funky clips are perfect to add a little excitement to a simple outfit. Grab these hair accessories for $20 to $45.
3. "Green Before Green Was Cool" T-shirt: This graphic t-shirt by local artist Kade Twist is neat. It's also unisex! Put it on for $22.
4. Cookbooks: Become a cooking whiz in no time with the variety of cookbooks available at the shop for $15 to $35.
5. Navajo Folk Art Cute and colorful animals that can be placed around the home or office. We can't help but smile at these little creatures. Prices range from $10 to $50.

​1. Jewelry by Althea Cajero This stunning necklace took our breath away. When we thought we'd pulled ourselves together, we saw the price. Though the necklace is $9,800 (and therefore completely out of our price range), we can't help but wish for it.
2. Woven digital prints by Sarah Sense From afar you may not appreciate this piece, but after an up close look at it, you'll be in awe. Sense takes enlarged digital prints and blends them together using basket weaving techniques. The result is something wonderful. The "Cow Girls + Indians" print, pictured above, costs $1,700.
3. Norman Akers print The pleasant blend of colors makes this framed painting by Norman Akers an eye catcher. Pick it up for $600.
4. "Sometimes I Just Sit" by Roxanne Swentzell This statuette has a simplicity to it, but also an appeal. Take it home for $750.

We'll pass on...

​Corn necklaces. Yes, they're made from real corn that has been dried and dyed. We'd much rather eat the corn than wear it around our neck so we'll pass on these $6.50 necklaces.

One reason to go back... The shop caters to the Arizonan. It's full of artwork by local artists. There is pottery, textiles, and jewelry inspired by the Southwest. And of course, there are Arizona-specific items including travel books and games (we spotted a Grand Canyon board game).

On Thursday, December 8, the shop will stay open until 8 p.m. during its member's sale in which members receive 20 percent off purchases. The sale is in stores and online.

The Heard Museum shop and Berlin Gallery are located at 2301 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix. The museum is open 364 days a year (Christmas Day being the exception). Visit the shops on Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. For more information, visit the Heard Museum website.
