Alley Tour: Grand Avenue and Polk Street

Categories: Mural City

It's about time Phoenix sees some serious mural love. In the interest of giving credit to their artists and because we're losing track of the times we've said, "Woah, when did that go up?", we bring you Mural City, a series on the murals springing up around town -- their artists, their hosts and their inspirations.

Artists: Francisco Garcia, Alban Fernandez, Francisco Guerrero, Averian Chee, Edgar Fernandez, and Jeff Slim

Location: Universal Hair Salon, 925 Grand Ave

The only noises coming from behind Universal Hair Salon are the sounds of spray cans being shaken, sprayed and tossed aside. The six young men painting on the parking lot walls aren't causing a scene -- there's no loud music and there's barely a conversation above a mumble. They say they're leaving the noise making up to the mural.

Francisco Garcia calls the collaborative mural a study in Chicano and Southwest culture. When the mural is done, the group hopes it will show solidarity between cultures and against current cultural and political conflicts.

Francisco Garcia supplied the paint and coordinated the walls for the mural with Universal Hair Salon owners.

The group says their inspiration comes from cultural references as well as those in textbooks and photos.

Averian Chee works on the "historical" section of the mural, on a face of Native American chief.

Sections of the mural are both collaborative and individual works. The above was done by Francisco Garcia, who says the group will be painting over this panel (and the one below) to include more modern-day Chicano conflicts.
