Monica Aissa Martinez paints, draws, print-makes, and on occasion, mask-makes. She has a blog where she writes about her creative stuff -- her stuff, his/her stuff, maybe even your stuff.  And you may be able to catch her (and her work) at at the Modified's Converging Trajectories: Crossing Borders and Building Bridges exhibition in August.

Read more about why Martinez does what she does and how often she attempts a headstand after the jump ...

1. Name five things on your inspiration wall (real or imagined)
Imagined:
- Familial and ancestral presence
- Something from each person/teacher/artist who's influenced my work ... could be art, book, one or more groupings of words, sound, music, rocks, bones, nest, a picture.
- Oh! And a postcard from my showing at the MOMA ...
- And some full of life sweet silence
Real:

- A piece of paper with the words "Creative Structure" written on it. Pinned it up 2 years ago. It's the title of my newest painting.

2. What was your last big project?

I was invited to participate in the Locals Only exhibition, at the Phoenix Art Museum.

3. What's your next big project?

I have a few projects I'm involved in...
- A Fall solo at the Visual Arts Gallery, Central AZ College.
- Though maybe this is more appropriately the "big project," I'm working with three very creative women artists. We're bringing our energies together in preparation for an exhibition for next year's Art Detour. It'll include one monumental work by each of us, and several smaller works that directly lead up to it. You'll get a glimpse of our process, which we are each documenting as we move along.
- In my blog, it's under the category "What Goes on And What Takes Place" I write about inception of idea, venue, and continue with posts about each individual artist's process and influences as well as photos of everyone's work and studio. Big. Fun. A Project.

4. Why do you do what you do?
I enjoy the whole process, including the finessing of observation, processing and communication. The practice is hugely challenging, and satisfying. It connects me to the larger community. It pulls out the best (and at times the worst) in me.

5. What's something you want phoenix to know about you?
My favorite play is Thornton Wilder's 'Our Town'. In Spanish the title translates into Nuestro Pueblo. Seems relevant to me these days. Stuff is surfacing for us to take a look at all the time, this moment in fact. Both in the small picture and the big picture of our existence, attention is vital to a quality life, for all living creatures.

Quoting Emily Webb at the end of Act III, "Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?-- every, every minute?" I try...

(And if you're game, what's something you DON'T want phoenix to know about you?)
I spend some part of my week, and I have for a number of years, trying to master a handstand. I've fallen completely over more than I care to say: O-U-C-H!
Am I paying attention every single minute? Probably not (I'll keep trying).
