Writing workshops are all the rage this summer. Between the bookstores and the libraries, there are more than 20 writing workshops around the Valley through July, hosted by a gamut of literary notables and catering to all kinds of writers, from tweens and teens to poets and memoirists (there's a list after the jump).

But if you're more of a social change seeker, a raging blogger type, or just looking to express how you're sick of all the crap, check out the "First Person Imperative" writing workshop with author and playwright Tania Katan on Saturday, June 19.

The workshop is for people who are interested in using creative writing to affect social change. Participants will talk about the things that piss them off or make them happy, share stories, and get it all down somewhere -- in "letters, monologues, rants, and midnight spray-painting campaigns," according to Katan's website. They will be able read their writing aloud and get feedback.

The workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 19 in Phoenix. Participants are asked to bring a writing utensil and paper; water and snacks will be provided. Registration costs $65. For more information, visit www.taniakatan.com.
