he Tempe Youth Library Gallery is currently featuring "Eye Candy," an art exhibit featuring work by locals Veronica Francis and Adrian Lesoing.

Artists from all over Arizona applied to be part of this show, says Michelle Dock, a gallery coordinator for the city of Tempe; their work was judged by a jury of four local artists and professors.

But only two were chosen for this juried show, representing very different interpretations of the theme.

Red, White and Blue Cake Pops With Tim O'Connor At Honey Moon Sweets

Firecracker cake pop from Honey Moon Sweets.
Last week we went DIY on the cake pop, with a trip to Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo's home kitchen on the west side. Today we're in Tempe with a baker who's gonna tell us how the pros make cake go pop.

Fitting for the Fourth of July.
Tim O'Connor and his wife Joan, owners and head bakers at Honey Moon Sweets, are ready for this holiday weekend with an assortment of red, white and blue cake pops -- and other treats -- that will save you the hassle of making that tired Fourth of July homemade treat, the white sheet cake decorated with strawberry "stripes" and blueberry "stars".

Wouldn't you rather have a bit of rich cake dipped in chocolate ganache?

Check out plenty of gorgeous shots of these little treats and learn how the O'Connors make them, after the jump.

Frozen Yogurt in Phoenix: Hot Spots to get a Cool Treat

Categories: Shweet!
froyo1.JPG

Speaking of frozen yogurt, people apparently love this stuff. There are currently more than thirty places to pick up the cultured treat spread throughout the valley, and it seems another one pops up every week, filled with patrons clamoring like junkies to get a hit of froyo, as it's known on the street.

Who can resist? It's like ice cream without the remorse; guilt-free indulgence. And the variety! Most froyo lounges boast selections of more than ten yogurt flavors and 30 toppings. My math may be off, but that allows you at least four billion flavor combinations.
Now, as we learned earlier today, not all froyo is created equal. Here are some of the Valley's newest and best places to get your fill of ice-cold, flavored active bacterial cultures.

Have a favorite -- mentioned here or not? Leave it in the comments section!

Yumberri Yogurt (20250 N. 59th Ave., 623-566-9866)
Yumberri is one of the more environmentally-conscious frozen yogurt shops you're likely to find. The store uses serving cups and spoons that are biodegradable and made from stuff like recycled paper, corn and potato skins, and donates cash in support of eco-friendly charities. Yumberri also holds a monthly "change the world" contest, in which kids ages 2-18 email a letter telling how they're environmentally friendly, with the winner receiving a professional photo shoot, a $25 gift card and a poster declaring his or her victory posted in the store. Oh yeah, there's also yogurt: A variety of 15 flavors, many of which are non-fat or dairy-free, along with 30 toppings.

Zen Zen Yogurt (4340 E. Indian School Rd., 602-795-6711)
A self-described "self serve frozen yogurt and shaved ice fusion shop," this family-owned and operated froyo stand opened in April.Hungry customers can peruse decadent choices like red velvet cake, peanut butter and sugar-free chocolate to more tart flavors like green tea and pomegranate. At least one flavor is made dairy-free and many are gluten free as well. Toppings range from fresh fruit to cereal to boba. And did we mention they have a shaved ice machine? We've been told it's excellent mixed right in there with the yogurt; you'll have to find out for yourself.

Orange Leaf Yogurt (11144 N Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd,, 480-551-7238)
A look at Orange Leaf's froyo menu will likely get your flavor senses tingling: Original Plain Tart, Mountain Ripe Strawberry, New York Cheese Cake, Pomegranate Blueberry, Death by Chocolate, Strawberry Banana, Pistachio Almond, Cherry Blossom, Peanut Butter, Kona Coffee, Green Apple, Oreo Cookie, Green Tea, Snickers, Red Lime, Mango, Peach, Taro. The place also offers more than 40 toppings, including some of the more interesting you're bound to find -- cocoa pebbles, dried grapes and sunflower seeds, to name a few. Orange Leaf currently has locations in Gilbert and Scottsdale, with a spot in Chandler coming soon.

Yogurtini (725 S. Rural Road, 480-264-6805)
According to their web site, Yogurtini was thusly named because "at Yogurtini you can mix your favorite flavors at our yogurt bar, just like a fine martini." While we're not sure we exactly follow that logic, Yogurtini is the undisputed king of topping selection, with more than 65. Espresso bean and Sriracha hot sauce, anyone? The froyo shop currently has locations in Phoenix and Tempe -- with four more set to open in Arizona in the future -- serving a rotating list of 10-16 flavors like Chelsea's cheesecake, acai tart and Yogurtini's signature blueberry tart. If you're one of those cruel people who likes to dress up animals, bring your dog along to your next visit -- Yogurtini also carries apparel for your pooch.

Fairytale Brownies in Bite-Sized Morsels -- a Dream Come True

Fairytale Brownies
We know there are those of you out there who strongly believe that pie is the next big thing, and we see the signs, sure, but we're also betting on the brownie.

On a recent trip to ABC Baking in Phoenix, we couldn't help but notice the prominent display of brownie-making and decorating supplies, and did you know Wilton has its own Brownie Fun! book?

Hmmmm. And what about that brownie-cutting pan on late night TV?

Locally we're still seeing a lot of love for the cupcake, but we forgot all about Sprinkles earlier this week, when a big box of Fairytale Brownies landed at New Times.

Just the Right Candy for You

The holidays inevitably mean lots of candy and chocolate to go around, but it's not always easy to choose just which type of goody to stuff your face with. While we've attempted candy binges before, maybe it'd be a good idea to take a look at this chart from www.eatingtheroad.wordpress.com next time, which shows you just which type of sweet treat you should chew.

Local purveyors of all things adorable are huddling together Friday for the 3rd Annual Indie Crafeteria. The event touts 30 local artists and live music, but here at Chow Bella we can't keep our eyes off Smeeks' Sweets Alley.

The "alley" will feature tasty cakes and such from Sweet Pea Bakery, Silk Shortbread, and ib2 Chocolates. We can't wait to get our hands on Urban Cookies' ollie cakes because we are still suckers for cake in a cup.

You can get your sweet fix Friday from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. outside of Frances Vintage on the corner of Camelback Road and Central Avenue.

SHWEET!: Flambe Galaktobouriko @ My Big Fat Greek Restaurant

It's alive!

My only two regrets from visiting the Mill Avenue My Big Fat Greek Restaurant and ordering this custard piled high with vanilla ice cream and caramel? That I didn't get a photo of dude setting this dish (and almost himself) on fire with flambed brandy, and that I'm not cool enough to pronounce "Galaktobouriko."

But other than that, everything else was chill. Well, actually, hot as you can see by the bubbling goodness covering the plate. I ate this beast by myself on an empty stomach and couldn't even think about food for the next six hours, so be sure to enjoy this with a friend or five.

SHWEET!: Tapioca Pearl Drink at Pho Avina

Papaya on the left, Thai tea boba on the right

I remember the first time I had bubble/boba tea. Those tapioca balls tasted as good as the first time my lips met a piss-quality brewski, which is to say that it was a baaddd experience.

But now, I heart boba tea, especially at Pho Avina, by far my favorite west side Vietnamese restaurant that Miss Chow Bella herself, Michele Laudig, introduced to me while she was working on this review.
