A sushi-making class at The Sushi Room last summer.
Add yet another local restaurant to the list of places going for a rebrand this summer. Every time we turn around, it seems another spot has gotten a face lift and a new name.

This time, it's The Sushi Room in Chandler's turn to change things. The restaurant, which opened its doors in 2011, will reopen as a new concept called Rock Lobster on Tuesday, September 2.

The Beverly to Open Next Week in Former Mabel's on Main Space; Here's the Menu

Mablesonmain-facebook.jpg
Mabel's on Main/Facebook
The bar at Mabel's on Main will remain intact.
For years, Mabel's on Main was a go-to spot in Scottsdale for a well-crafted cocktail you could enjoy in a dramatic, high-style atmosphere. The dark wooden bar, leather banquettes, and hidden private room (or didn't you know about that already?) made it a one-of-a-kind spot in Old Town.

Now chef-partner Aaron May has sold the swanky dining and drinking spot to other familiar set of local restaurateurs, Genuine Concepts -- the group responsible for The Vig, The Little Woody, and the recently opened barcade The King. They're closing Mabel's to make room for a new concept called The Beverly.

July Restaurant Openings and Closings in Metro Phoenix

Lauren Saria
Phoenix has been lacking a doughnut truck for too long. Thanks, Rollover.
From a new food truck to the revival of two Valley restaurants into new concepts, July had some great new options for Phoenix diners, even during a time when other spots usually close for a few weeks to a month to avoid the inevitable summer slow down. Unfortunately for some spots, shuttering for that same summer slow down was a permanent deal -- though others already have revamping plans of their own.

Proper Meats + Provisions: All-Local Farm-Raised Butchery to Open in Flagstaff, Tucson

Proper Meats + Provisions
Paul Moir
It'll be bit of a trek for Valley food lovers, but that doesn't mean a trip to Proper Meats + Provisons in Flagstaff and later Tucson won't be worthwhile.

The butchery and deli claims to be the state's first butcher shop offering "100% Arizona farmĀ raised meats." Owner Paul Moir says having locations in both southern and northern Arizona will help Proper Meats create much-needed infrastructure for the local meat market, as well help bring back the lost art of butchery.

"It's a craft that died out," Moir says. "But it's coming back."

The project is the latest to come from Moir his wife, Laura , who also own Brix and Criollo Latin Kitchen in Flagstaff and Proper in Tucson. The plan is to open an outlet of Proper Meats in Flagstaff within the next two months and a second Tucson shop by the end of the year.

Mucho Macho Taco Coming Soon, Courtesy of Former Tacos Atoyac Owner

Thumbnail image for NewRestaurantAlert1.jpg
If you're a taco eater you'll likely remember -- with a shudder -- when Tacos Atoyac closed its doors suddenly in March. The team behind the popular Mexican restaurant, Daniel Maldonado and Pablo Lopez, had gone their separate ways.

Lopez returned less than two months later -- same space, same concept, new name: Restaurant Atoyac Estilo Oaxaca.

Now it's Maldonado's turn. He and new partner Aaron Miller are back in action and ready to announce a next project coming soon to central Phoenix.

Angry Crab is coming to CenPho!
If you still are looking for a good seafood experience, you really don't need to look any farther than Angry Crab Shack in Mesa to see the flaw in that thinking. The locally-owned restaurant serves a menu of Cajun seafood that includes crab, shrimp, and crawfish (on a seasonal basis).

And there's good news for fans of such spicy sea fare: The restaurant will open a second location in Phoenix later this year.
