Proper Meats + Provisions
Paul Moir
It'll be bit of a trek for Valley food lovers, but that doesn't mean a trip to Proper Meats + Provisons in Flagstaff and later Tucson won't be worthwhile.

The butchery and deli claims to be the state's first butcher shop offering "100% Arizona farmĀ raised meats." Owner Paul Moir says having locations in both southern and northern Arizona will help Proper Meats create much-needed infrastructure for the local meat market, as well help bring back the lost art of butchery.

"It's a craft that died out," Moir says. "But it's coming back."

The project is the latest to come from Moir his wife, Laura , who also own Brix and Criollo Latin Kitchen in Flagstaff and Proper in Tucson. The plan is to open an outlet of Proper Meats in Flagstaff within the next two months and a second Tucson shop by the end of the year.

If you're a taco eater you'll likely remember -- with a shudder -- when Tacos Atoyac closed its doors suddenly in March. The team behind the popular Mexican restaurant, Daniel Maldonado and Pablo Lopez, had gone their separate ways.

Lopez returned less than two months later -- same space, same concept, new name: Restaurant Atoyac Estilo Oaxaca.

Now it's Maldonado's turn. He and new partner Aaron Miller are back in action and ready to announce a next project coming soon to central Phoenix.

If you still are looking for a good seafood experience, you really don't need to look any farther than Angry Crab Shack in Mesa to see the flaw in that thinking. The locally-owned restaurant serves a menu of Cajun seafood that includes crab, shrimp, and crawfish (on a seasonal basis).

And there's good news for fans of such spicy sea fare: The restaurant will open a second location in Phoenix later this year.

The Sweet Shoppe offers housemade treats including a variety of fudge.
Congrats, Tempe! You've got your very own nut house now. Ok, we kid. But it is true that about a month ago downtown Tempe added a new candy and confection shop to the mix. (At least it's not another ice cream shop.)

The new kid on the block is The Sweet Shoppe and Nut House, a second location of a Flagstaff candy store that comes courtesy of Blake and Jennifer Rolley. The shop is located at 740 S. Mill Avenue, two doors north of P.F. Chang's.

Reading and drinking go together like, well, reading and drinking.
Although just about as many restaurants opened as the ones that closed last month, the good news is that of the places that shuttered, many have plans to reopen as new concepts in the coming months. So, although it hurts to see some local mainstays shutter, it's nice to know there's something new and exciting on the horizon. How's that for a silver lining?
