The BRM from Bahama Buck's is good and cold.

Banana splits and sundaes are so last year. Now it's all about the shaved ice. Choosing one or more flavors for whatever mood you may be in, topped with a splash of cream couldn't be sweeter. Go for the fruit flavors if you're craving that refreshing taste, or birthday cake or cotton candy flavors if the sweet tooth kicks in.

And if you can't release your grip on that pint of ice cream, add a scoop of ice cream to your shaved ice. Here are our five favorite places to score a heap of shaved ice in metro Phoenix.

Bahama Buck's
Stepping into Bahama's Bucks is like entering a tiki party celebrating the awesome shaved ice. Bahama's Bucks has dozens their own gourmet flavored syrup, making their flavors standout from the others. Make your order a BRM -- Bahama-Rama-Mama -- to get a scoop of vanilla Blue Bell ice cream added to your order. The way the ice is packed inside the cup by hand gives it a smooth texture and it doesn't melt right away. The heap of ice on top looks like snow capped mountains with cream on top. Each order is dressed with a mini umbrella.

The guava and horchata shaved ice gives you North Shore vibes.

Kamana' Wana Hawaiian Treats
If you close your eyes while eating Hawaiian shaved ice, you can almost hear the waves crashing on the North Shore...not really. But you can get a taste of the tropical oasis at Kamana' Wana Hawaiian Treats. Kevin, the owner, runs his shop solo, taking the time to create each shaved ice for his customers, many of whom he knows by name. We love the horchata flavor with its subtle hint of cinnamon. Not only can customers add ice cream and cream to their shaved ice, but mochi bits can be added for only 50 cents. Other Hawaiian treats are on the menu, such as pitaya bowls made with dragon fruit, oats, bananas and blueberries. Shaka, brah.

NONE OF THIS, especially Bahama Bucks! The hands down BEST is at Kea Lani Shave Ice in San Tan Village Mall. NO large ice chunks, super fine SHAVED ice! Amazing flavors/combos, huge portions, & inexpensive! They have a Groupon for $5, you get $10 worth of shaved it! My husband & I go and never even you the entire $10. This really is a MUST in the AZ heat! Enjoy!!! ;)

The only place with real shave ice is Maui. everything else in AZ is more like a sno cone.

Thank you for properly calling this dessert "shaved" ice.  I find it annoying how many people call it "shave" ice.  It's ice that has been shaved into a container (past tense) and flavored.  Similarly, we drink "iced" tea, not ice tea.  The tea hasn't been turned into ice, it has ice placed in it, therefore it is "iced."  These things matter to comprehension.

Nice. The article said "shaved" instead of shave ice.

The key is having ice really shaved (solid circular block of ice spinning against a razor) instead of crushed. Would love to know which of these do that - maybe all?

The Ice Box is an awesome new truck! Tom has amazing flavors and toppings! My favorite so far has been rum with dulce de Leche topping. Yummy!

@Jukes Apparently you have never been in Hawaii.  The correct term is "Shave ice".   Quite different than iced tea.  The person or persons who wrote this article don't know any better and probably have never been in Hawaii either.   I would also bet that none of the places have actual "Shave Ice? but more than likely they try to pass their "Sno" off as "Shave". Big difference.

Hello Chris,

At Zoni's we use the circular block with the razor blade shaving.  This creates the perfect snow like texture.  We start wtih a scoop of ice cream, then top  with Shave Ice, then add the flavors and top off with cream.

Check out our Facebook page or website  Zoni Shave Ice.  Thanks!

Don't think so.  I know some of then actually have snow cones and not shave ice.
