It's been a few months since we told you that Hayden Flour Mills -- in conjunction with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, the city of Phoenix, and Barron Collier Companies -- planted two acres of native Arizona wheat at the PHX Renews site in Indian School Park. Back in January, the fields looked more or less like a big dirt plot, but over the last few months the land has been transformed into fields of billowing wheat.

Now it's time for Hayden Flour Mills to harvest one acre of White Sonora Wheat, a heritage grain that's one of the oldest surviving varieties anywhere in North America.

And they're going to need some help.

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 14, the public is invited to the Phoenix Renews Field on the northeast corner of Indian School and Central. From 6 to 8 a.m. Hayden Flour Mills will hand harvest and thresh a 1-acre field of White Sonora Wheat.

If you'd like to help, bring scissors or garden clippers and dress appropriately for the sun. There will be White Sonora Wheat baked goods for harvest helpers, as well as a wheat weaving activity for the kids.

For more information, visit the Hayden Flour Mills Facebook page. You can RSVP to the Wheat Harvest by private message or a comment on the page.
