Southern Rail to Open at The Newton in Phoenix on May 30

Since news broke early last year about The Newton, the mixed-used development that's taking over the former home of Beef Eaters Restaurant on Third Avenue and Camelback Road, we've been excited about the project.

The Newton will house a Phoenix location of Changing Hands Bookstore (including a bar called First Draft) and the gardening supply shop Southwest Gardener. First Draft will serve light fare, coffee, beer and wine, but the only restaurant in the development will be Southern Rail, a second spot from Chef Justin Beckett.

Southern Rail will open to the public on Friday, May 30.

The restaurant will draw inspiration from all over the south including "the 'low country' cooking of the coastal Carolinas, the famous Cajun and Creole fare of New Orleans, and the slow-smoke barbecue of south Texas." The chef aims to pay homage to these cuisines by blending classic Southern dishes with local Arizona produce.

Expect dishes such as house-smoked chicken and grilled andouille sausage gumbo; beignets; cornbread salad with grilled cauliflower, marinated tomatoes, pickled beets and okra; house-smoked trout with sweet pea cake and spiced tomato jam; and fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese.
