Heather Hoch Simple and so good: this combo plate is an ASU-area staple.
91. Combo Plate from El Pollo Supremo
The Southwest corner of University Drive and Ash Avenue is a hotbed for delicious aromas. With Cartel coffee being roasted, Otto's Pizza being baked, and El Pollo Supremo's meats being grilled up all within a few feet of each other, it's hard to tell which thing you're smelling over there is the thing you're craving. However, if you're short on dough, El Pollo Supremo is a great spot to get some legit Mexican grilled meats on the cheap.
If you haven't been before, or if you have and you're crazy hungry, you can't go wrong with the combo plate for $8.50. With two huge pieces of bright red chicken, a quarter pound of beef, three piping hot and freshly made corn tortillas, a side of beans, a side of house salsa, and a final side of pickled onions, you're sure to get completely stuffed with some extra to take home for later.
While the meat and even beans are definitely the star of El Pollo Supremo's combo plate, ask anyone who regularly drops into this Tempe staple and you'll find out the secret favorite at EPS are the pickled onions. The salty, briney, bright purple onions might not seem like much, but the plate just wouldn't be as good without them.
