Snooze in Central Phoenix Struggles to Live Up to the Hype

Snooze serves an ambitious menu that winds up feeling slighltly anonymous.
Whether it's a humble meal of eggs and toast or an elaborate dish of eggs Benedict and handmade pastry, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day and it's the meal Snooze, and A.M. Eatery in Central Phoenix specializes in serving -- every day until 2:30 p.m. The restaurant chain, founded in Denver in 2006, made its way to the Valley late last year, bringing with it a signature brand retro-cool design and environmentally-sensitive cuisine.

No matter when you come by for a meal you're likely to have to wait for a table at this buzzed-about spot, but is it really worth the hype?

The answer isn't straightforward. Some dishes, like the strongly recommended chilaquiles Benedict, hit the nail on the head -- while in other circumstances, the dishes can fall flat.

Here's an except from this week's review by Deborah Sussman:

Of the items strongly recommended by servers, the chilaquiles Benedict in particular lived up to the hype. The barbacoa was as flavorful as advertised -- tender and smoky, the right base for perfectly poached eggs, roasted poblano Hollandaise, pico de gallo, and cotija cheese over "ranchero sauced tortillas." But the Breakfast Pot Pie, also recommended, didn't fare as well. I love both breakfast and pot pie, but a few bites in I had to concede that this was a soulless mess. The puff pastry on the bottom was flaky but lacking in substance, and the rosemary sausage gravy, ladled over a few pieces of undercooked carrot, didn't pack the kind of punch gravy has to when it's the star of the show.

Terrible, mean review. This place is wonderful! Every bite I've had to eat there is delicious, and their coffee is great. About those pancake flights - you should have tried them. The basil pancakes and the pineapple upside-down pancakes in particular are phenomenal.

We went soon after Snooze opened, and the service was very good. I was excited to see scrambled tofu on the menu, and was told it was great, but it was grossly over-salted. I keep wanting to go back and give Snooze another try, but waiting 90 minutes for breakfast is ridiculous.

How about a little more press for just flat out good breakfast joints? I don't need pablanos in my benedict, rosemary in my potatoes, or lemon in my pancakes. It's early, I'm hungry, I want a damn good breakfast. Butter's, 40th St, Café, Over Easy I don't know of a lot of good choices anymore but those  sure are. I miss my centrally located Susan's Diner, that's for sure. You can keep the new crop of trendy breakfast joints.

terrible "article", if you can call it that. Who is saying it doesnt live up to the hype? When I went there we had to wait 90 minutes for a seat! Best breakfast I ever had, maybe the best meal.

It's okay, step above IHOP, but not anything to die for...

The original in Denver was grossly overrated, in my opinion! Matt's Big Breakfast is superior!

Not to mention they have excellent coffee to boot.

Whose knocking Snooze? I had the sweet potato pancakes which were great but the breakfast tacos were amazing! Maybe they corner the market on spicier breakfast dishes? Fine w me! :)

Doesn't change my opinion. To each their own. I haven't had EVERYTHING on the menu. But what I have had was amazing.
