Payton Curry Posts Photo of Food Critic on Twitter -- Way to Keep It Classy, Chef

Chef Payton Curry
Chef Payton Curry of Brat Haus and Taco Haus isn't playing nicely. The chef, clearly unhappy about a recent review of his restaurant Taco Haus written by local food writer Gwen Ashley Walters, outed the undercover restaurant reviewer on Twitter on Monday.

Walters, who writes reviews for Phoenix Magazine and publishes her own food blog, Pen and Fork, regularly goes out of her way to hide her identity in order to maintain her ability to review restaurants anonymously. It seems Curry has little regard for her efforts.

A blurred screenshot of Curry's tweet showing the face of Gwen Ashley Walters, Phoenix Magazine's food critic.

To put things in perspective, consider that in the past Walters has gone so far as to wear elaborate costumes and makeup to disguise herself in public. That makes Curry's move not only a petty one, but also one that threatens Waters ability to do her job as a restaurant critic.

In the review -- which runs on page 139 in the May issue of Phoenix Magazine (currently available only to subscribers) -- Walters writes that, "Taco Haus has a certain appeal despite lackluster tacos" and goes on to advise diners, "to get the most out of Taco Haus, grab some friends and dive into the small plates, margaritas, and cervezas . . ."

For Walters, the tortillas were dry, the salsa lacked flavor and there wasn't much consistency among dishes from visit to visit. The rotisserie chicken "lacked even the moistness of most grocery store birds."

Ouch. That's quite a pan, coming from the typically sunny Phoenix Magazine. But cause for revenge? Walters did rave about the décor. And she liked the chips. Perhaps Curry should look inside his kitchen for a solution to his problems.

Walters, whose parents were both journalists, also is a professionally trained chef and cookbook author.

This is not the first time Curry's Taco Haus has been associated with a social media temper tantrum. Just two months ago, a photo was posted from the Taco Haus Facebook page that attacked a customer for not leaving a tip. The photo also showed some of the diner's credit card information.

Considering the review's fair but critical tone, what do you think about Curry's reaction?

Mr. Kreiger! I don't know these people nor do I know you cuz I'm not that big of a deal. What I do know is that small business is enjoyable and challenging at the same time. If you would like to come by and have a snack and a cocktail it's on the Haus. I'd love to show you what an employee owned restaurant looks like. We would love to have you and a guest swing by. If not, have a great meal at your local hanghaute. Cheers

If I wrote what I really thought, I'd probably get attacked by Payton too.

I must be the only one that posted that isn't either a relative or employee.

Was this the same place that posted a pic of a receipt from a customer that left no tip? If the food isn't good - and the service bad - whats wrong with letting people know?

I think this is at least the third time. Sherrif Joe must not have done anything annoying today. See you at the Farmers Market Payton.

Slow news week New Times? Why don't you repost Howard Seftel's photo?

Because they get a ton of traction and hits on 'their spite' it's all about relevancy. I truly appreciate what they are doing for our new Haus. All of the employees that are shareholders fully understand what a dividend check is now, the others understand a reality Czech by the Republic.

I'll see you tonight at the Schnepf Farms Dinner. I cannot wait to fill your knews feed with fun thymes. Thank you New Times and Amy Silverman for the support!

Wasn't impressed anyway, so this just seals the deal for both restaurants.  In my minds eye, good food, good service, and cleanliness shouldn't be difficult, especialy for a professionally trained chef.  Too many choices to worry about these places.

I will never eat at Brat/Taco Haus after these last two PR fail incidents. Payton can seriously go fuck himself.

I wonder how Payton the Petulant and his partners are feeling about this whole issue at this point. Frankly, I wish someone from their camp would chime in and let us know. It's hard to see the silence on their end as a sign that they've decided to just rise above all this noise because that isn't something Chef Curry, at least, seems able to do in these situations.

He must be chomping at the bit and wanting to charge into this conversation. Somebody else is probably pulling back on the reins. Still, it would be interesting to hear from someone from team Haus on whether or not that picture was worth the thousand or so harsh words it's triggered in response.

Curry's a jackass. Instead ofovercharging for mediocre food and drinks, try tightening up your kitchen. A taco is still a taco, don't fancy it up so you charge more. Stay in Scottsdale, tourists and 1%er's don't know the difference.

I just posted the picture too, so now what? Payton J. Curry did what he felt he needed to do, just like the New Times did when they outed Howard Seftel!

Soooo...dude posts BOTH a food critics photo...AND a copy of a receipt a few weeks back where some kid didn't leave a tip.  What this owner is saying is "Do what I want or I will out you for it."  1.  If the Service SUCKS...Don't leave a tip...a tip is EARNED--not guaranteed.  It's called "service".  2.  If the food served isn't to the standards or palate of the reviewer--the review would reflect that.  I see those spots as bars and not "restaraunts" anyway....Chef--keep the beer cold and the servers hot---because your food and service is obviously sub-par.  Either fix it, or let the new people come in and do it.....

*YAWN* Phoenix New Times has some of the worst journalists I have ever seen in print. Your entire music staff sucks goat balls and needs to go.

I love how no one here has anything to say about the New Times publicly outing their old food critic in their own publication after he left for the AZ Republic. Also Payton is an extremely talented chef, who is very dedicated to his craft. So much so he is involved in the production of alot of the food supplied to restaurants he is a part of. How many chefs in the valley can say that? If you have ever dined in a fine dining environment where Chef Paytons food is served and have any semblance of a palate, then you know he amazing at what he does. Lastly to all you weekend warriors who look down upon all us lowly people in the F&B industry and have never stepped foot into a restaurant to work, remember we don't come to your job and tell you how to conduct yourselves. Don't be so quick to judge what you know nothing about.

Critics have the power to destroy a restaurant, movie, TV show, etc., fair or not, with one stroke of the pen. One bad experience, in an otherwise good restaurant, can be published for the masses and hurt the reputation of a restuarant. In most publications, there is no recourse available for the business to respond. Your critic should have been more careful. What is the problem? Just because it is her job, she can hide behind a disguise, and slam Taco Haus? Why is it fair for her to do this, using her job as an excuse, but not for Taco Haus to out her? The way I see it, Taco Haus just responded with a walk off home run.

i'm incredibly confused how this has anything to do with her ability to disguise herself and remain anonymous. It's not like this thing called the internet exists where i can find pictures of you on line in other places or anything.........

The difference is YOU chose a profession or job in the public arena. You will be judged on your service to the patron. Often you are judged on things beyond your control. Don't like it? Don't have a job where you are paid for taking orders and delivering them.
