A small sample of the kind of top-notch brews you can find at Arizona Wilderness Brewing.
One of Phoenix's newest breweries is gaining a lot of buzz with its craft brews after RateBeer.com, which is known as the preeminent craft beer ranking site, made it number one in its list of the world's top new breweries. Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. in Gilbert has only been open a little over half a year, but the small craft operation has gained praise with an ever-changing lineup of beers using all locally sourced ingredients.

In a recent interview with Esquire, the brewmasters spoke about being near bankruptcy before opening the wildly popular brewery. If you remember, the brewery was funded by Kickstarter, and if you donated to the project, we can bet that you're patting yourself on the back for helping these guys open a brewery that's putting our fair city on the map for things other than controversial politics.

Since opening seven months ago, the brewery has made 65 beers in 44 styles using all locally sourced ingredients from vendors like Hayden Flour and Go Lb. Salt. We're partial to the Picacho Pecan Pie Brown Ale. However, if you're looking to try out some of their buzzworthy brews, you can only find them at the brewery for now. Looks like it's time to make a trip to Gilbert.

Though we're sure being named the best new brewery in the world is plenty praise enough for AWBC, the brewers are also a finalist in this year's Big Brain awards for Culinary Art. You'll have to wait until Artopia to see if they'll get the prize.

WARNING: Beer may not be worth the parking mess! Surrounding businesses are having vehicles towed from plaza after business hours (8pm). Marked tow-away zones are not required and Town of Gilbert allows towing companies to charge fines of up to $500 for vehicles towed from within city limits.

The award was won fairly but there were less than 10 people who reviewed the place at the time of the award,(and a fair number of them were probably employees) so less than 10 people said that this is the best new brewery in the world, hardly qualifies as a large enough demographic to really say they are the best. Combine that with the fact that they are making beers that intentioally are infused with spices and made sour and you have a hard time reviewing the beers since they don't compare to traditional beer styles.  Lets see them make a really good Pale Ale or IPA. they have not been able to do so so far. Making bad homebrew style beers is easy. Making a good clean beer time after time is another thing.

I just have a lot of friends that are in the beer brewing world and I heard they didn't exactly play fair when it came to this award. I'm not of a fan of bribery and things that aren't acquired in an honorable fashion. Sorry.

if you're shooting for the buzz killington award i'd say you pretty much have it in the bag.

Brian, again you are misinformed. The award isn't for best in the world. It is for best "new" brewery in the world.

You are free to speak you opinion, but please be informed when doing so. The owners have nothing to do with the members ratings. The members traditionally aren't experts, although some are BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) judges and certified cicerones, but most have rated hundreds, if not thousands of beers. I'd say the award holds dome merit.

Which is a lot like someone choosing the best restaurant off of their yelp rating. Pretty flawed method.

I'm not wrong at all, it is based off of user ratings, not the guys who run ratebeer.

Basically, the beer is good but nowhere near best in the world good.

It should be noted that this is based on reviews by people that may or may not have been encouraged by the owners, and isn't being judged by experts.

I have been to this place, never again. If this is what craft beer is supposed to taste like than take me back to Four Peaks where I can drink a mighty fine award winning beer that doesn't give you the runs later.
