Facebook Faux Pas? Scottsdale Restaurant Posts Photo of Rude Tipper's Receipt

Taco Haus in Scottsdale.
We've written a fair share about tips here on Chow Bella -- everything from tipping etiquette to auto gratuities and, of course, a few crazy stories of tipping gone wrong . . . and tipping gone totally right.

This weekend, Scottsdale's Taco Haus chimed in on the tipping debate, posting a photo of one customer's receipt on the restaurant's Facebook page that featured some nasty comments. The customer hadn't tipped on a $8.64 bill -- and left a few choice words and insults instead. The post, which stated that the customer was 16 years old, included the customer's first and last name and some credit card information.

The photo, shown above, was posted on Saturday but was taken down later that night. We've blurred out the diner's name and credit card information, all of which was visible when the photo was posted by Taco Haus.

As we all know, social media can be difficult to navigate, particularly for restaurants. And Taco Haus wouldn't be the first local business to rub customers the wrong way with a photo and a short Facebook post.

But there are two sides to every story, and in the past, we've asked restaurateurs and chefs -- including Taco Haus owner Dave Andrea -- whether it's ever okay not to leave a tip. Not surprisingly, most of those we asked expressed the opinion that it's never acceptable to not tip a server.

What do you think? Should Taco Haus have posted the photo, particularly with the customer's name visible? How do you think bad food and/or bad service is best handled?

Soooo......if the service SUCKS.....I don't leave a tip.  I don't care if it's a douche old town spot or some average spot on the west side.  a "tip" is NOT guaranteed people.  a TIP is EARNED.....

A tip is earned, yes. Leaving at least a buck should be done. Servers only make $2.31 an hour so unless serving minimum wage goes up, tip your server! I believe the establishment should have blurred the information, but I believe it is acceptable to post his rude comments. That was completely unnecessary! Where the heck are the kids parents on common courtesy and manners?

As a mother of 3 and 4 on the way, I think that people of all races should be allowed to vote and as far as children copying off of smarter children, I say they should be allowed to carry weapons. This is a great article to wipe with.

If the server does not provide good service and/or the experience in the restaurant is not a good one and not attempted to be rectified, I don't see a problem with not tipping. A tip is not a "right" it should be earned. And appreciated no matter what that tip might be. Sometimes the food may be horrible but the service might be okay so you leave a small tip but then the server doesnt appreciate it. Today everybody feels like they should be tipped. Whatever happened to people just doing their job to do their job? Not referencing servers in this comment but rather ice cream counter workers, Someone getting you a nonalcoholic beverage from a beverage cart, etc.

When we get bad service can we post pics of bad servers? Give me bad service and I will leave you a penny. That says more than no tip at all. That not being cheap. That is making a statement.

Taco Haus acted as immaturely as the guest did. If you're going to knock a kid for not having manners, you should probably first have some yourself.

Only if they want to attract people who enjoy drama and brand themselves as an impulsive organization, who will attempt to publicly humiliate its customers, rather than handle issues in a productive manner internally.

I work in the service industry and I think its kinda funny! Its not like it was a $100 tab, only $8. Whether or not it was a good idea to post it is debatable. Its tacky yes, but everyone talking about it so seems like its working in their favor.

Agreed the person's info should not have been posted online. Especially if he or she is a minor. But really... This type of person should not be tolerated.

Sure, as long as customers can shame bad establishments publicly...

Good for Taco Haus. Never been there but I applaud them. More public shaming would teach people how to better behave. TIP YOUR SERVERS!!!

After working in the Restaurant biz for over 15 years, it is likely you'll run into one of these types of guests, but they are rare. Tips are not to be expected, they are earned, but to be blatantly disrespectful towards your server is unacceptable and shows real class and maturity, NOT. Funny part about this post is, that the tab is eight dollars. Who goes out, and runs up an $8 tab, especially in Scottsdale? Enough said. And was it proper for the establishment to post this, No. Just shows, the guest and the person that posted this, must be on the same level. My advice is, do not go there.

This is why businesses need to have PR pros in place, even if not full-time. This never should have happened.

Not sure how the service was, but the person was wrong to make lewd comments in any case. The restaurant is totally wrong for posting personal information on a social media site! Everyone who goes there has to be concerned about their informations security! Shame, shame Taco Haus!

Being in the service industry I always try too tip something (lowest amount $1), even if the service sucked, the bigger problem is, who are the parents that raised a kid, that would do something like this in the first place

I think this is dumb because you have no idea how poor or good the service was

not with their personal information...i get the frustration of not being tipped...but if he really was 16...he has a lot to learn and they published a minors personal info online... as a mom i'd be pissed! 2 wrongs don't make a right, and now the restaurant has a bad rep. i for one will never go there...

Not a professional way to deal with rude customers, but he also put himself out there by being a dick. The vulgar language was uncalled for.

Steve I hope you like $20 burgers. Just tip your server the amount is up to you.

I think both parties are wrong in his case. If the kid was that upset he should have had the guts to speak with a manager, not take it out on a minimum wage worker. As far as the restaurant this is a very poor way to get your point across.

Steve Garcia

make restaurants pay a fair wage to their workers and this is a moot point.

This is not a comment card, it is a business transaction . Where else in the business world Is this acceptable. A guest always has the right to not tip for a several reasons . However, the cowardly way to voice your freedom of speech through written slander is simply pathetic and in this case childish. In regards to the business posting it on Facebook, probably not the best practice.

Posting this to social Media huh? Has it made your service or food any better? Has it damaged this boy's reputation for not leaving a tip? Be an adult and move on. There is always someone that doesn't like you. Get use to it.

Why would taco haus respond to a teenager in such an unprofessional way. The kid is 16, who cares what he thinks of the food/service.

I've got no sympathy for the ignoramus who would write that on their receipt. If you act uncivilly you should expect the same in return.

I have dined at Taco Haus. Decent food, a kind of Americanized Mexican food. Nice atmosphere. But posting this was just a plain old mistake. I am sure they regret their mistake.
