Lula's Tortillas have that great homemade flavor.
If we ever moved from the Southwest, fresh, handmade tortillas surely would leave a hole in our hearts. Luckily, we're Phoenicians, so we're spoiled by vendors like Lula's Tortillas, who use years of tortilla-making expertise to bring delicious tortillas to local farmers markets. Though the tortillas currently are available only at two markets in town: Old Town and Ahwatukee, Lula's plans to expand to Gilbert and Queen Creek markets as well. Lula's, a husband-and-wife team, offers made-in-Chandler tortillas in corn and flour varieties. We love the gluten-free corn tortillas for their lower calorie count and smaller size. Plus, it's reassuring to see only two ingredients on the label: water and corn flour.

Though there isn't anything earth-shatteringly new, you need to know about how to make the best use of these corn tortillas. After eating and cooking with an entire bag, we have some notes. First of all, if you're in the habit of warming tortillas before using them for tacos, know that Lula's get crisp quickly. That means if you make a mini-quesadilla with queso fresco, the corn tortilla will turn out a little crunchy, which definitely isn't a bad thing but might not be what you're expecting. Our favorite use of Lula's corn tortillas is in enchiladas, because the sturdy little tortillas can hold up to sauce in a way that makes most others break.
