The House at Secret Garden is patio perfect.
For those who think South Phoenix is food-starved when it comes to great restaurants, think again.

At the moment, the five best restaurants in the area feature farm-fresh produce, luscious meats, and organic grains -- many locally sourced -- in boldly flavored, scratch made dishes that are deceptively simple and completely satisfying. Their settings range from romantic, to breezy, to decidedly modest. And for those that have patios, al fresco perfect.

Some are longtime favorites, others just a few years old, and all would appreciate a visit.

(Note: For now, Quiessence at the Farm at South Mountain, which re-opens on November 12 under new ownership as well as a new executive chef and sous chef, has been left off this list.)

The House at Secret Garden

Thirty-two-year-old chef Dustin Christofolo may have left to helm Quiessence (which, along with The House at Secret Garden, he owns with mom Pat Christofolo), but he's still overseeing his restaurant's contemporary American menu of housemade pastas and dishes utilizing locally sourced products. And with patio weather in full swing and new chef Chris Barch (St. Francis) adding a few touches of his own, the romantic Spanish-style mansion is as inviting as ever.

I don't know how you could say Ahwatukee is not South Phoenix! When I saw the article, my first thought was "I wonder what places in Ahwatukee are on the list"!

Such a shame you included a restaurant in Ahwatukee and missed Amano Bistro quite possibly the best hidden gem in South Phoenix.

On the money with these. Chanpen is amazing.

Ahwatukee does not equal South Phoenix in my book. That place is other-side-of-the-mountain far! But definitely want to check out the Thai place!

You left out Amano Pizza Bistro. They have consistently outstanding food and the best monthly wine pairing dinners.

Oh, I don't agree that a restaurant in Ahwatukee is considered part South Phoenix.

I love The House at Secret Garden! I first ate there for Restaurant Week and the food was spectacular. I've been to The Farm Kitchen many times but still need to visit Morning Glory and Quiessence.
